2016 Trends That Must Die

Social media was a major catalyst to countless beauty trends going viral last year. While some trends are timeless, others should be axed from your beauty routine in 2017. Here are 7 that we think are definitely "out":

1. Stenciled Brows

Also known as the "Instagram Brow". These heavily filled in brows look boxy, unnatural and command too much attention. Instead, fill in the tail-end lightly and brush them upwards with a lightweight brow gel for a feathery, effortless look.

2. Harsh Contouring

From contouring to "nontouring", gone are the days where we sit by our vanities for hours, sculpting our faces with dark creams and powders. In 2017, we move away from cakey bases and are embracing fresh-faced looks like those on Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner.

3. Clown Lips

No more Kylie Jenner Lip Challenges please. Last year, matte, overdrawn lips were all the rage. Ain't nobody got time for that! It's too much work. Goodbye to crusty matte formulas and heavily lined lips. Instead, we say hello to subtly defined, creamy pouts.

4. Glitter Everything

Men adorned glittery beards while ladies had glittered roots. This was an Instagram fad that just does not translate well in real life. Besides new year's eve and music festivals, let's put the glitter down.

5. Crazy Nail Art

These intricate 3D nail art look almost like mini sculptures on the nails. Alas, they are completely impractical. When putting on a pair of contacts becomes a struggle, we say forget about it. Simple glossy nails are the way to go.

6. Unnatural Hair Colours

We've seen our fair share of rainbow braids, neon dip-dyes and grey dye jobs flooding our social media feed. This year, it's all about accentuating the natural tones in our hair with rich browns, reds and blondes.

7. Streaky Highlight

In 2016, everyone went highlighter crazy. We love a glowy base as much as the next person, but some looks were treading ET territory featuring metallic streaks on the cheekbones and tips of the nose. Opt for a liquid formula, blending a small amount only on the high points of the face for a more believable "glow from within".
