Star Awards 2024: A Behind-The-Scenes Look At Desmond Tan’s Red Carpet Outfits
We spoke to fashion stylist Jenine Oh on taking inspiration from the leading man’s pivotal moments in life for the red carpet.
The dapper Desmond Tan and August 2021 BAZAAR Man cover star is no stranger to leaving audiences swooning with his looks on the red carpet. At the 2024 Star Awards, the leading man arrived suited and booted in Louis Vuitton, and made a wardrobe change for the main show in another look by CELINE HOMME.
Speaking to us in an exclusive interview, Tan’s longtime collaborator and fashion stylist Jenine Oh stated that her approach for his looks this year was about “returning to the red carpet’s foundational, formal, and solemn ambiance but inserting some fun elements in his wardrobe (and) marrying timeless elegance with contemporary flair.”

How did you go about picking this look for Desmond?
In recent years, Desmond’s style at the Star Awards has consistently embodied a sense of adventure, characterised by his willingness to explore new styles and stand out on the red carpet. Notably, he has frequently opted for white ensembles, evoking a ‘Prince Charming’ aesthetic. This year holds particular significance for Desmond, marked by his nomination for Best Actor and his debut appearance at the awards following the joyous milestone of fatherhood. My approach this year is returning to the red carpet’s foundational, formal, and solemn ambiance but inserting some fun elements in his wardrobe, marrying timeless elegance with contemporary flair.

Desmond’s first red carpet look features an outfit from the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2024 runway—but we changed the runway jacket to a black version instead. It’s a black ensemble that’s far from dull. He’s sporting a crop jacket for the first time, adding a fresh twist to his style.
Layered over it is a cozy knit cardigan with cute pearl details and we accessorised the look with contrasting white gold and diamond jewellery. We opted for a full pavé Reflection de Cartier necklace and tie pins as brooch to complete the look—giving off a subtle British royal vibe.

For his second onstage look, I opted for a classic tuxedo from CELINE HOMME, but with a sparkling twist—the whole suit is covered in sequins, adding a touch of glamour. Both outfits share the colour black, but they stand out with their unique designs, bringing a fresh contrast to the typical black outfits seen on the red carpet.

How do you think his look reflects Desmond and his style?
Over the years, our approach to the red carpet has consistently embraced a playful aesthetic, reflecting Desmond’s inherently goofy and comedic personality. Conversely, for the awards ceremony, we gravitate towards a more solemn and dignified tuxedo ensemble, mirroring Desmond’s dedication and seriousness towards his craft.
