Elle Fanning looked every bit a Hollywood star when she arrived for an appearance at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in an elegant little black dress.

The actress's ruched gown by Carolina Herrera featured a plunging sweetheart neckline, long sleeves that puffed at the shoulders, and a high thigh slit. She paired the dress with matching black heels and gold jewelry. Fanning wore her hair down in loose curls and opted for glittery eye shadow and a red lip.

She also waved to fans and posed with a pair of black sunglasses outside Colbert's studio in New York City.

The actress shared photos of her look in a carrousel post on Instagram last night. "COLBERT 😎 TONIGHT FOR 'THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE,'" she wrote in the caption.

Fanning is promoting her new Hulu show, The Girl from Plainville—which is based on the true story of Michelle Carter, the woman convicted for allegedly encouraging her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, to take his own life via text messages.

"We wanted to, with this show, kind of shine a light on mental health and how technology is affecting young people these days … and that kind of false intimacy," Fanning told Colbert. "I mean, I'm an actor so I live in, like, fantasy all the time, but our show really plays with that blurred in-between of reality and fantasy, and it's so easy to get lost in the fantasy when it's all over text."

Fanning has played wonderful, enchanting characters in Maleficent, The Great, and other onscreen projects, but this will be her first time playing a real person who is still very much alive. She told Colbert that it was "eerie" to look at herself in the mirror while filming after being transformed into Carter. She said the show's costume designer found and acquired all the same clothes Carter wore in the courtroom for her to wear, and the hair and makeup team spent two and a half hours on her each day to make sure she looked like her character.

Apart from her acting accomplishments, Fanning—whose elder sister is Uptown Girls actress Dakota Fanning—has become a fashion icon of sorts. At the LACMA Art+Film Gala last year, which was sponsored by Guccishe wore a partly sheer black gown by the brand, with cutouts along the sleeves and torso. Later that month, she showed up to the InStyle Awards—where her stylist, Samantha McMillen, was honored as Stylist of the Year—in a Balmain by Olivier Rousteing crop top made entirely out of metal. She paired the backless piece, which resembled two links in a gold, crystal-embellished chain, with a black column skirt.

Red-carpet energy aside, Fanning has also showed off her personal taste (and humor) with her daily outfits. Last year, she famously wore a pair of Jonathan Anderson for LOEWE's "ready-made" white sandals, each of which featured a cracked egg on the heel. "An egg-cellent outfit for the morning," she captioned a post featuring photos of her look at the time.
