When it comes to making serious waves in the industry, few performers have the opportunity to reach hundreds of millions of listeners with their music—let alone start at the tender age of 13. After posting a number of song covers on YouTube, Madison Beer was discovered by Justin Bieber, who tweeted a video of the singer and songwriter covering the Etta James classic “At Last” in 2012. Now at 22, Beer has officially released her first studio album, Life Support, and amassed more than three billion streams across her catalogue (which began independently) to date, according to her record label, Epic Records.

In addition to having a slew of popular singles plus a massive social media following—with 29.7 million followers on Instagram alone—Beer is no stranger to the beauty space. In 2021, she launched the personalised and dermatologist-backed skincare brand Know Beauty, in partnership with actress Vanessa Hudgens, after dealing with cystic acne for years. “There are times where I look at my Instagram and I’m like, ‘Oh, you seem like such a happy, like, glowing person,’ but then I’m in bed crying myself to sleep,” she tells BAZAAR.com of her challenging skincare journey. “And it’s hard, because I try to be really transparent with my fans and people who follow me as much as I can.”

What are you reading these days?

I just read The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. I learned so much about how trauma literally reshapes your body and brain from reading it, and how that affects our relationship to pain and healing. It's such an eye-opening read I think everyone can learn something from.

What are some of your go-to bath and/or shower products?

I’m not sure if this technically counts as a shower product, but an integral part of my post-shower routine is doing a facial massage with a crystal face roller. My face tends to be a little puffy when I wake up, so this step really helps with releasing some of that and making me feel ready for the day. I typically use my roller right after applying Laneige’s Cream Skin Toner and Moisturizer, which was recommended to me by a friend. And while I don’t always use an exfoliant because my skin can be sensitive, when I do, I’ve been reaching for Lush’s Ocean Salt.

What beauty or self-care products do you use on a regular basis to help combat Zoom fatigue?

I love doing a mask on days where I need a little pick-me-up. My skin can be a bit temperamental, but last year, I was able to develop a skincare line called Know Beauty, which has been such a game changer for my skin. I love using our Detoxifying Charcoal Mask after a busy tour day!

Do you have a favourite hand sanitiser, soap, and/or cream right now?

Good old Purell has been a staple in my (and everyone else’s) bag this year! I find it can be really drying, though, especially in winter months, which is why I always have a small bottle of lotion handy too. Right now, I keep Caudalie’s Hand Cream in my bag everywhere I go, and I love it because the cream has a really clean, natural formula.

Do you ever light a candle or stick of incense to decompress? If so, what are some of your favorites?

I love lighting a candle first thing in the morning to start my day on the right foot; you can’t go wrong with anything from Diptyque, and I personally love their Baies scent.

What was the last beauty product you put on today?

Probably a spritz of Victoria’s Secret’s Tease Crème Cloud Eau de Parfum. I shot the most incredible campaign for the brand with the legendary Mario Sorrenti. We drew inspiration for the shoot from the fragrance itself, which is super light with a hint of sweetness—all of the imagery was so dreamy.

Are you into bold makeup, no makeup, or no-makeup makeup right now, and why?

I typically go for a beauty look that's more on the side of no-make makeup for every day, but I do like to go bare faced a lot of the time, and I love a super-glam moment as well! The Channel Surfing Artistry Palette I created with Morphe is the perfect go-to for any look; it has literally any shade I could ever need. While I use it for everything, my go-to everyday makeup is a really subtle cat-eye I create using an angled brush and a shadow in the palette colour called Zeppelin.

What's the last fitness class you streamed or attended in person?

[Since the start of the pandemic,] I've really enjoyed streaming yoga classes and doing guided meditations. There are so many great apps for meditation, like Calm or Insight Timer, which make it super easy to find something you enjoy and can regularly stick to.

What's one piece of self-care advice you'd recommend to our readers?

Disconnecting from your phone and social media, and taking time for yourself without distraction is so important! So is making time to spend with the people you love.
