Introducing Our May 2017 Issue Dedicated To All Things Beauty

Editor-in-Chief Kenneth Goh brings us through the blockbuster beauty issue

may 2017

The lexicon of beauty has changed so much today that it’s become increasingly genderless, borderless and ageless. It’s an arena that promises to make you look — and feel — better, prettier and fresher with products and services that don’t judge your size, income or state of mind.

In this issue, we want to embrace different facets of beauty, and what it means to women of different ages and backgrounds. As Harper’s BAZAAR celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, my role as custodian of the Singapore edition is all the more pertinent in this digital age — where our magazine and website address a wider, more diverse and time-starved audience than ever before.

Living in a multi-cultural society encompassing so many religions, races and dialects, I make a conscious effort to be as inclusive as possible, but always in a chic, elegant manner. I try out makeup and skincare, espousing the virtues of Clé de Peau Beauté’s Le Serum as one of my skincare favourites and Sulwhasoo’s Perfecting Cushion as a mainstay in my cosmetics kit. I try on the latest bags in press rooms, opening them up to see if it fits all and sundry, and if the zipper works efficiently without snagging a loose thread or chipping a manicured nail.

Fashion and beauty today are increasingly a shared wardrobe and vanity table experience, with both sexes happily borrowing from each other. As girls go to work in oversized pinstripe men’s shirts and leather skirts; guys go from gym to boardroom, glowing with dewy, tinted complexions, leaving no pore uncovered.

Despite — and because of — what is happening in world politics right now, Harper’s BAZAAR is making positive changes right before your kohl-lined eyes. Carine Roitfeld’s pre-fall fashion and beauty spread embraces diversity in model choices, dressing hijabi model Halima Aden in Balenciaga. We shot one of Singapore’s greatest model exports, Huda Ali, who, at 43, is living proof that age only makes one more beautiful, with a confidence and grace that comes with worldly experience and that certain je ne sais quoi.

Beauty at every age, for every colour and every race — if politics shared the same vision, the world would indeed be a more beautiful place. Let fashion pave the way forward.
