How would you describe your brand’s aesthetic?

Effortless Elegant — to create ageless garments for all kinds of women. Fashion is a captivating subject and is about expressing your identity. My work aesthetic is to reinterpret a concept and recreate the work. Understanding how the body functions, and what it is capable of, gives me the idea of how my clothes should be designed. It is the whole idea of translating something that is flat to something that is three dimensional. After all, the body comes in various shapes and sizes, and is not just a thin sheet of paper.

As a textile designer, I want to bring prints and textile manipulations as a form of messenger between the wearer and viewer. I believe that I can turn art and facts into something more definable and wearable. I aim to design and construct clothing to tell my audience a story through visuals, which in this case, through the garments. The cuts, colours, fabric choice are elements of the storyline. And the outfit functions as a character — the wearer’s identification.

Who is your ultimate muse?

Right now I don’t have any ultimate muse, at least not for any design reference that I have made so far. But if you were to ask who I always look up to when I design, I would say Alexander McQueen.

He is a designer and couturier that has pushed fashion’s limits to a different extreme. And what I love about his designs aesthetics is that each collection he had has a strong story behind it. It’s the idea of a story collection that inspires me to always have a collection that tells a story. Fashion is not all about beauty and pleasing to the eyes. It can be a form of a statement that I can tell to my audience. His fashion shows are raw and really powerful. It can be disturbing, but definitely powerful. I feel that he is one of the fashion designer that has evolve the fashion industry and proved that fashion is not limited.

What is your life motto?

“There is beauty in everything even if it deems undesirable by others.”
“Being different is unique.”

It’s the perception how I see towards life. There may be a flaw in a person or an object, but if you view it in an another angle, it may reveal to you a story which is what I feel fascinating about. Also, I feel that being different from the norm is what makes a person outstanding. Doing things differently doesn’t make you weird and outcasted, but it makes you stronger and bolder than others. Is not always about what’s on the surface, but about what’s beneath you and what’s within you that actually defines you.

What does it mean to you to be a BAZAAR NEWGEN finalist?

It means I get an exposure of how to create garments that not only has it a commercial value but at the same time retaining my creativity on textile exploration and designs. It’s about finding my unique selling point as a designer and incorporate my design philosophy to create garments that always have a strong story behind.

How would you describe your brand’s aesthetic?

ESH’s aesthetic is based upon the duality of gender in clothing — marrying masculinity and structure with the fluid female form. ESH showcases the alluring qualities of androgyny with masculine pieces coupled with a woman’s innate femininity.

Who is your ultimate muse?

I think my ultimate muse would have to be Marlene Dietrich. Dietrich embodied the environment of her era, becoming synonymous with the austere, structured military dress people favoured in the 1930s. In her daily life she favoured tailored pantsuits, but on stage, she was a siren draped in exquisite figure skimming gowns.

What is your life motto?

“Hustle and Heart will set you Apart” by Alisa Jacobs is my current motto in life. I think it encompasses two key ingredients that are necessary to succeed at anything you do, the dream or interest to set the goal and the constant motivation to make sure you get there.

What does it mean to you to be a BAZAAR NEWGEN finalist?

To be a BAZAAR NEWGEN finalist means that not only do I get validation for my designs, but I also get the incredible opportunity to get mentored by industry experts who will teach me skills that will come in very useful in process of starting and sustaining a fashion business.
