As we settle into a new decade, one colour seems to be dominating already. Charlize Theron – who so often favours muted tones for the red carpet – chose to kick off her 2020 award-season wardrobe with a bright green Dior gown for the Golden Globes last Sunday. And, in the week that has passed, Lupita Nyong'o, Rachel Brosnahan, Lizzo and Kristen Bell have also chosen the unexpected and bold hue for appearances.

Nyong'o wore a bright green, pleated, sleeveless gown for the New York Film Critics Circle Awards last week, which was from Valentino's spring/summer 2020 collection.

Brosnahan also turned to the colour, wearing a fitted, neon-green dress by Alex Perry for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

And Lizzo has also embraced the unique hue in the form of a lime, feather-trimmed dress for a performance, which Jameela Jamil captured on her Instagram, while Kristen Bell chose a silky green two-piece by Cong Tri for the Critics' Choice Awards.

Although bright green feels like an unexpected trend, the hue was actually quite significant on the spring catwalks, making its way into Balmain, Versace and Victoria Beckham's SS20 collections, among others.

Whether bright green will continue to trend on the red carpet this season or will filter into our wardrobes remains to be seen, but what seems certain is that we are in for a very colourful awards season.

Theron was in good company at the Globes with bright colours dominating the red carpet, from Scarlett Johansson and Nicole Kidman's punchy reds to Zoey Deutch's canary yellow jumpsuit and Michelle Williams' peachy moment. Meanwhile, at the afterparties, Kate Bosworth went bold in hot pink, while Yara Shahidi chose bright yellow and the Critics' Choice Awards saw orange and green making a splash.

As we enter a new decade during a time of uncertainty where gloomy headlines dominate the news, these trending brights offer a message of unlikely optimism, giving us at least little escapism and light relief. Here's hoping it continues well into the year.
