With all that glitz and glamour, it’s easy to forget that not all outfits look as pleasant or as effortless as they seem. And when it comes to being a celebrity, sometimes looking the part is downright painful. Here, we list all the times celebrities have suffered in the name of fashion.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian is no stranger to uncomfortable looking outfits, but her most recent costume at the 2019 Met Gala probably takes the cake. Her wet-look Mugler dress at the 2019 Met Gala had an illusion effect of dripping crystals, with an impossibly nipped in waist – which led many to wonder if she had to remove her ribs to fit into it. The mother of four later denied those rumours,  but admitted it wasn’t a bed of roses, either. She told WSJ magazine in an interview, “I have never felt pain like that in my life,” and the corset she wore left severe indentations on her skin afterwards. Yikes!

Elle Fanning

During Cannes 2019, Elle Fanning reportedly fainted at a dinner party, and it was all because of the vintage 1950’s Prada prom dress she was wearing. The actress, and the youngest member of the Cannes jury, had “collapsed and fell off her chair,” during the Chopard Trophee dinner, according to Variety. Her sister, Dakota Fanning, whom was beside her at that point, led the actress to her feet before being whisked away by security. Later that night, she took to instagram to explain the situation: her dress was just a tad bit too tight.

Dakota Fanning

At Dakota Fanning’s fitting for Netflix’s The Alienist, which was set in New York’s 1896 high society, the actress told Digital Spy that she “actually fainted during my first fitting, which gives you an indication [of what it was like to wear a corset.”  She continued on the realities of being a woman of that time: "As a female, it was another thing you couldn't do for yourself. You had to wear these elaborate costumes to keep up this facade of what women were supposed to be – you couldn't even take them off on your own at the end of the day."

Sarah Jessica Parker

Who can forget Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex In The City, and the plethora of beautiful shoes she wore which made her so iconic up till today? But there’s a price for beauty – the actress reportedly permanently damaged her foot. "I went to a foot doctor and he said, 'Your foot does things it shouldn't be able to do. That bone there... You've created that bone. It doesn't belong there,' " she said to luxury e-tailer Net-a-Porter. The actress reportedly “literally ran in heels” for the ten years or so, working 18-hour days and never taking her heels off, where she “slipped a couple of times” and even twisted her ankle.

Nicole Kidman

Remember Nicole Kidman’s iconic performance for 2001’s Moulin Rouge in her Burlesque-dancer corset? The actress reportedly fractured two ribs while trying to get into it. "I had this thing that I wanted to get my waist down to 18 inches, which Vivian Leigh had on Gone with the Wind and I was just like, 'tighter, tighter'," she told Graham Norton, on that pivotal moment before her ribs broke.  Production was halted during this time and when she returned to set, many of the scenes were filmed from the chest up and shot while she was on her wheelchair.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham’s penchant for heels has become her trademark look. But years of wearing six-inch stilettos have taken a painful toll on the fashion icon, and she had to face surgery to remove her bunions. The star was reportedly forced to put ice on her feet and do daily exercises before giving in to a bunionectomy operation as advised by her doctors.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner looked every bit the stunner in a floor length silver number by Balmain at her very first Met Gala in 2016, but it came with painful consequences. Shortly after the annual bash, the actress took a snap of her scratched legs and “purple feet,” with a caption: “When ur dress made you bleed and ur feet are purple.” Ouch!

Emma Stone

The ultra-tight corset Emma Stone wore for The Favourite had a lasting, organ shifting effect on her. "For the first month, I couldn't breathe, and I would smell menthol and it would make me think I was in a wide-open space and could breathe for a moment in time. After a month, all my organs shifted—it was gross, and if you don't have to, don't do it!," she told Graham Norton.

Ariana Grande

The singer is known for her signature tight, high ponytail, but Ariana Grande revealed that it is actually, pretty painful. It all started when Camila Cabello turned to Twitter to voice her woes when she tried the high ponytail on herself, but found it too painful to carry on wearing. Grande responded, admitting that her signature look gives her a lot of pain – but she doesn’t care.

Lily James

Lily James looked every bit as magical in Disney’s Cinderella in her signature blue gown. But the actress later confessed that wearing the famous gown was “torture.” “My corset was so tight, I could only have liquid food.” She told The Daily Mail.
