Fashion Faux Pas Runway Trends
Remember the days when the fashion rule book was somewhat black and white? The seasons came and went with it, the trends that would come down the runway provided a checklist of what was in and what was out.
As fashion often shows us, what goes around comes around, and some former fashion fails are so cool they are now not only back in style but seen on the runways of some of the biggest fashion houses, worn by the hottest models. Here are 7 former fashion don'ts that have become absolute fashion do's!
1) Fanny Packs
They had the power to pull down almost any outfit. Unless you worked at a hawker stall or a construction site, there was really no need for you to carry around such a bag. Recent years, however, have seen the "fanny pack" morph into the more streetwear savvy" crossbody" or "bum" bags. We still are mixed on having any bag strapped to your waist but the jury is out on this one.
2) Acid Wash Denim
This "bleached-splattered" denim trend was once an 80's staple along with oversized shoulders, big hair-sprayed up-dos and pin-clad punks of the generation. Fast forward to 2020 and many a millennial is sporting some variation of this trend. It's funny how the 80's are often referred as a questionable year for fashion and taste, but they somehow seem to the one of the most referenced by today's designers.

3) Tie-Dye Prints
This hippie favourite of the 60's made a resurgence in the late 90's and early 00's. Think oversized T-shirts paired with caps tiled to the side, worn by skater boys. If you look through your old childhood vacation pictures, it seemed to be the number one go-to "island destination" travel-wear. Today however, the psychedelic nature of the print has been transformed to its high fashion counterpart, adopted by everyone from Harry Styles to Rita Ora and Gigi Hadid.

4) Over-Accessorising
It was the cardinal rule advised by Mademoiselle Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel herself—"before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off". That said—no doubt the 40's and 50's were simpler times—it turns out these days we can't help ourselves and as it seems, decades later, the French house may have forgotten this once sacred styling rule of thumb.
5) Pairing Socks With Sandals
This "trend" in particular does also pertain to that of men's fashion which, if we're being honest—has its fair share of cringe-worthy trends. From Virgil Abloh's Louis Vuitton men's Spring/ Summer '17 to being seen on TikTok boys, this trend is has slowly crept its way back to mainstream fashion, and truth be told, it takes a certain sense of panache to be able to pull off this look without looking like you stumbled out of bed in the middle of the night.

6) Low-Rise Trousers/ Visible G-String
From Britney Spears to Christina Aguilera, the exposed midriff with a peek-a-boo G-string was once a rare, thrilling moment of the early 2000's but (shockingly) low-rise trousers seem to be making a comeback—and with it, the resurfacing of a familiar piece of underwear we'd perhaps prefer to see left in the last decade.
7) Wearing White After Labour Day
Since Spring/ Summer shows are usually showcased in September, almost all white pieces that strut down the runway after May 1st go against this rule. But who is really following it anyway? Although it is safe to say that there is no bigger faux pas that wearing white and being spotted with brown foundation lines on the collar of your outfit. White is incredibly unforgiving, especially when worn in a tropical country like Singapore, so for this one—wear with caution!
