Italian fashion designer, Stefano Pilati is using Instagram Stories as a platform to tease the possible launch of a new eponymous brand. Calling it a “test,” he posted 17 all-black, genderless looks on his personal account last Friday. Pilati served as the head designer of Yves Saint Laurent from 2004 to 2012, before moving onto Ermenegildo Zegna and Agnona between 2012 and 2015.

Given the perishable nature of Instagram Stories, Pilati’s followers had only 24 hours to view the snapshots of the collection before they disappeared. He did, however, post one video and two still shots, captioned “Random Identities 1,” on his main Instagram feed. The video was directed by Matt Lambert and stars dancer MJ Harper.

If the brand proceeds to launch, it’s likely to be called Random Identities, which the designer intends to mean “freedom of behaviour.” Pilati has said that he wants his customers to experience fashion in a more personal manner, instead of giving into false advertisement and craftsmanship. The collection encourages individuality that goes “beyond the known gender signals,” he said in an interview with WWD on Friday.

The looks, inspired by Pilati’s friends in Berlin, are not for sale and are not likely to make it to production. The designer said that the release was just a teaser to gauge the response via Instagram. He plans to proceed with the project only when he feels the production standard is up to par. His concern for the customer extends into the collection’s price slash value relationship; Pilati stated that he wants the cost of it to be “exceptional” for your wallet.

The previewed collection features both menswear and womenswear, intentionally designed to be interchangeable. Some key pieces included a leather trench coat, a knee-length skirt layered over fishnet tights, and a sleek double breasted suit paired with a high-heeled boot. With no additional information given at this time, we recommend following Pilati on Instagram to keep abreast of any new developments.
