The hottest SS19 trends fresh off the runway

February Trend Report

If fashion is the ultimate escape, then the new season’s array of breathtaking creations will take you places. Designers let their imagination fill up their mood boards, and the result is an enticing selection made for adventures across cities and continents. Other key themes coursed through the catwalks as well: Over-the-top hats capped off a season where fun in the sun meant it is ok to hit the streets in your best swimsuits. The concept of utility also found higher purpose, instilled with a can-do attitude that proved inspiring. Welcome to the buzziest trends of the season.

Good news for sun worshippers: Designers such as Michael Kors, Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello and Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld have made the transition from pool to pavement easier by adapting swimsuits and bikinis for daywear. Wear a striking monochrome version with flare jeans, or let a floral number peek from under an equally graphic dress—there are now plenty of stylish ways to spend the hot summer days in.

A plethora of interesting headgear choices has popped up on the runways in recent seasons (fall/winter 2018’s turnout of balaclavas was particularly head-turning), but this spring/summer is undoubtedly the season of the hat. Topping the chart of accessories to add to your shopping basket, the best creations are anything of the garden-variety sort. Reworked into a lightweight wrap (J.W. Anderson), remodelled into a mortar board (Calvin Klein 205W39NYC), or resized to gigantic proportions (Valentino), there’s no keeping your head down this year.

From immaculately tailored boiler suits to plush leather dungarees, utility has a new look and it’s turning up on the catwalks looking more multifaceted than ever before. Clare Waight Keller’s take at Givenchy had a powerful military inflection, while Burberry’s interpretation (courtesy of the newly installed Riccardo Tisci) packed plenty of punches despite its soft tonal palette. Elsewhere, rising Parisian talent Marine Serre went the extra mile and filled a floor-length khaki dress with functional pockets. Whatever the focus, the message is clear: Roll up your sleeves and get down to business.

Like putting the finishing touches on a precious gift, designers wrapped the spring/summer 2019 season in plenty of exquisite bows. Marc Jacobs led the pack at New York, where elegant bows danced alongside pretty ruffles and fluttering feathers. In Paris, Dries Van Noten reworked the classic white t-shirt with a statement knot across the bust, while Miuccia Prada tied up any loose ends with pretty versions that decorated her girly dresses at Miu Miu.
