Channeling London during the '90s, Veronica Etro sent out a collection that melded house signatures with a cool, laid-back street vibe. Here, grunge wasn't obvious or literal, but rather seen in the loose knit hats and the melange layering of patterns, print and texture.
Sticking to an autumnal palette of deep blues, moss green and ruby, Etro used the beloved paisley print on hippie dresses worn over striped tops, baby dolls edged in lace and flowing skirts tempered with oversized sweaters.
Whereas the original grunge movement would have had girls plucking army surplus coats from dollar bins at vintage stores, the olive drabs here were reworked with Mongolian lamb collars and metallic prints. The same motif lined the inside of plaid jackets, either cropped and trim or oversized and voluminous.
Details counted for a lot here—like the way that every top layer was lined with a print or in the artful fraying of an oversized knit. Etro is one of the masters of mixing prints, pattern and color. And here, similar shades pulled together varied florals and graphics. This magpie was coordinated down to her wooly socks and velvet Mary Janes.
As beautifully bohemian as the velvet gowns were, it was the coats that stole the show. Anyone with a soft spot for military coats with a bit of zip will appreciate the new spin Etro gave this old standard. Peacoats were redone in printed silk, field jackets in luxe velvet and admiral's coats in deep purple plaid.
