The Fendi Couture Fall 2023 Collection Takes Inspiration From Its Muse’s High Jewellery Pieces
According to Kim Jones, the pieces were based on Delfina Delettrez Fendi's first high jewellery collection.
Ever since taking the reins at the Italian house in 2020, Fendi’s Artistic Director of Couture and Womenswear, Kim Jones, has been focusing his attention on establishing his version of a modern Fendi woman. His mix of precise tailoring and soft silhouettes for Fendi's ready-to-wear collections, including draped and flowy dresses, as well as novel colour play, have become dear to a new generation of Fendi fans.

For Fendi's Couture collections, he takes these signatures to another level. Case in point: the recent Fendi Couture Fall 2023 collection, which was shown this past July in Paris (the collection also made its way to Singapore for a special showing in late August). Jones cited Delfina Delettrez Fendi and her high jewellery creations as the starting point of the collection. He said, “This season, we wanted to concentrate on the achievement of fluidity, drape and shape through couture techniques, bringing these elements together with the attitude of today. We worked on a template based on Delfina’s high jewellery. Colours come from flesh tones as well as that of stones: black diamonds, rubies, sapphires."

This meant dresses draped to perfection, like molten metal. On some, a novel minstrel sleeve connected to the hem of the dress for a dose of drama. Black dresses also came in knits — a fabric rarely utilised when it comes to couture — and in a bejewelled version, studded with crystals reminiscent of black diamonds from Delettrez's high jewellery collection.

Speaking of decoratif elements, Jones opted for rhinestones and embroidery details on rich shaved mink and astrakhan numbers. And then there are the accessories: minaudières in square and rectangular shapes. When the models carried these bejewelled boxes down the runway, they clutched them close to their heart — a symbolic gesture that brought it all back to Jones' relationship with his muse, the house and its fans.
