The designer goes back to black for Fall, but be warned: there's No After Party

Attendees of Alexander Wang’s Fall 2017 show were warned in advance. Despite the young designer’s notable penchant for nightlife, this year’s event would feature “No After Party,” which aptly served as the collection’s title. However, the mood inside the once historic and now dilapidated Hamilton Theatre in New York’s Hamilton Heights neighborhood suggested that this would be the only celebration required.

Legions of fans descended upon the graffiti-covered auditorium, which resembled a concert stage more than it did a fashion show, complete with a bass-heavy DJ set and a pit in the center of the runway. Nearby in a well-lit corner, the Wang Squad was out in full force, with Teyana Taylor, Sofia Richie, and Kylie Jenner all in attendance – sister Kendall would walk the show, as would Bella Hadid.

The show was a study in what Alexander Wang does best, designed for a confident, fearless woman who is as comfortable in a leather jacket and tights as she is in a suit. Black is, evidently, still the new black. Oversized jackets with sloping shoulders were juxtaposed against micro-mini dresses. Skintight high waisted leather leggings were pared down with menswear inspired shirts. Rhinestones formed a choker around a turtleneck, offering an unexpected touch of glamour to an otherwise dark and serious collection.

As the models walked off the runway directly onto the sidewalk outside, Wang emerged to take his bow, his t-shirt reinforcing again, that there would be “No After Party.” The enthusiastic smile across his face suggested, however, that his night had only just begun.
