Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially announced their engagement this morning after over a year of dating. The royal popped the question earlier this month and the wedding is set to take place in Spring 2018, according to a statement from the royal family.
Hours after breaking the news, the couple hosted a photo call at Kensington Palace. The location of the photoshoot is significant, as it took place in the palace’s Sunken Garden, one of Princess Diana’s favorite places in her former home. Harry, along with Prince William and Kate Middleton, had just toured the area on the 20th anniversary of his mother’s death in August, after it was been turned into a memorial White Garden in honour of his late mother.
The couple was all smiles when they finally made their appearance. When asked how they were feeling, Harry said they were “thrilled.” Markle looked happier than ever. The couple wouldn’t divulge details of the proposal (“That will come later,” Harry said), but Markle hinted that it was romantic.
The actress wore a white coat dress and nude pumps for the occasion, and kept her hair in loose curls. Though she and the prince stood across the pond from photographers, they still flaunted her ring from afar. Harry reportedly designed the rock himself, and incorporated diamonds from a brooch owned by Princess Diana and one from Botswana.
The couple looked so in love during their first appearance as an engaged couple. This is only their second official joint appearance together, following their first at the Invictus Games in September, but it looked like it could have been their hundredth.
Congratulations to the happy couple! We’re already counting down the days for their royal wedding.
