Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were at his home earlier this month "trying to roast a chicken" when he proposed, in a moment that the actress described as "very romantic".
The couple sat down with the BBC for their first joint interview as a couple this afternoon, where they talked openly about the moment he popped the question.
Markle revealed that, naturally, the royal got down on one knee ("Of course," interjected the prince) to ask the all-important question.
“It was just an amazing surprise, so sweet and natural and very romantic," she said. When asked whether she gave an immediate yes, she replied: “As a matter of fact I could barely let him finish proposing, I was like ‘Can I say yes now?'"
Harry continued: “She didn’t even let me finish, she just said ‘Can I say yes? Can I say yes?' Then there were hugs and I had the ring on my finger and I asked, 'Can I give you the ring?' and she said ‘Oh yes the ring!' It was a really nice moment. It was just the two of us and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well."
The royal, who is notoriously guarded when it comes to his personal life, also talked openly about falling in love "so incredibly quickly" with the American actress, who he first met just 18 months ago.
"The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was sort of confirmation to me that all the stars were aligned, that everything was perfect," he said. "There was this beautiful woman who literally tripped and fell into my life and I fell into her life, and the fact that I know she’ll be unbelievably good at the job part of it as well, is obviously a huge relief to me because she’ll be able to deal with everything else that comes with it."
