Karl Lagerfeld On Kim Kardashian's Robbery: "You Cannot Display Your Wealth"

Kim Kardashian is back in New York City with her family after being robbed at gunpoint in Paris. As details emerge about what happened on that harrowing night, some people are pointing fingers at who was to blame. Was it an inside job? Was lax security to blame? Designer Karl Lagerfeld echoed the sentiments of other onlookers, blaming Kardashian's public displays of wealth for the robbery.

Lagerfeld weighed in on the robbery to reporters after his Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week. "I don't understand why she was in a hotel with no security and things like this. If you are that famous and you put all your jewellery on the net, you go to hotels where nobody can come near to the room. You cannot display your wealth and then be surprised that some people want to share it with you."

He also reflected on how the robbery affects the image of Paris, especially after the city has gone through terror attacks. "Image-wise I think it is very bad," he said. "We make all the efforts to make Paris appealing and then, apparently [the robbers] were people from the east. Eastern Europe."

A security expert explained a similar concept to HarpersBazaar.com Monday, saying that public displays of wealth can alert thieves. "All this Chanel clothing and things that highlight how wealthy they are is a huge target for people trying to do harm," Devin Tullis said, noting that for someone as famous as Kardashian, it's nearly impossible not to be public. "It's already all over TMZ, it's already all over the news. But this is what these people do, attention is their business. It's a catch-22."

Despite his chastising, Lagerfeld is supportive of Kardashian as she deals with the traumatic event. He shared an image of himself with a handwritten note Monday, reading, "Dearest Kim, we are all with you. Love, Karl."
