The 51-year-old actress, who was one of the first women to speak out about Weinstein, sued the former movie mogul for defamation last year after she claimed that Weinstein deliberately marred her career after she rejected his sexual advances back in the 1990s.

It has been said that the deal, which is yet to be signed, will cover all civil proceedings brought against Weinstein, however, it doesn’t affect the criminal proceedings which he is due to stand trial for this coming September.

The Associated Press reported that on Thursday lawyers involved in the negotiations said that a settlement is in reach.

"We now have an economic agreement in principle that is supported by the plaintiffs, the (New York attorney general's) office, the defendants and all of the insurers that, if approved, would provide significant compensation to victims, creditors and the estate and allow the parties to avoid years of costly, time-consuming and uncertain litigation on all sides," Adam Harris, a lawyer for studio co-founder Bob Weinstein, said.

He added that there was “still a lot of work here to do” but that he was “optimistic”.
