While waiting for the moderator to officially start the Zoom interview, co-stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas were joking amongst themselves like old friends. Having previously worked together in Knives Out (2019) and in Netflix’s The Gray Man (2022), the Hollywood actors have built a friendship on and off a film set, which made working together for the third time on Ghosted, an Apple Original film produced by both, a welcome professional reunion. It is, however, the first time they’ll be acting as each other’s romantic interests in a film. It’s also Dexter Fletcher’s directorial debut in the romantic-comedy film genre.

The film’s plot is simple enough: Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with the girl. Girl ghosts the boy, and a romantic pursuit begins. Seems pretty standard, right? Wrong. Who would ghost Chris Evans? We jest. The real plot twist in this film is seeing Evans, who portrayed Captain America in the Marvel films, play a character (Cole Turner) who needs saving.

This is where things get interesting. As it turns out, Sadie Rhodes (de Armas) is a CIA operative who goes by the codename “Tax Man”. In a case of mistaken identity, Turner gets kidnapped while roaming the streets of London looking for Rhodes. A series of thrilling action, adventure and comedic scenes follow as Rhodes attempts to rescue Turner, before becoming unlikely partners in espionage to save the world.

Ahead, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Dexter Fletcher on what it was like working on this film and more.

First dates take an unexpected turn all the time. Was this the inspiration for the film?

Chris Evans: The original premise was a lot simpler than that. Imagine living your best life then unexpectedly meeting someone while grabbing a cup of coffee and spending 24 hours on a date. That alone is fantastic cinema to me because it’s relatable.

Ana de Armas: There’s also this aspect where both characters are supposed to be people who’ve got everything figured out, but there’s a part of them that’s missing something. For Sadie, she’s afraid of loving and losing someone because she’s lost people in the past. And for Cole, he’s a farmer helping his dad because he’s afraid of writing his book and travelling the world. In this film, we see them getting out of their comfort zones—something that everyone can relate to—and see how they push each other to do so. And that really spoke to me a lot.

As producers, what did you want to achieve most with this film?

CE: To me, it was to make this one of those films that you could watch 100 times and never get tired of. And I think that comes down to the degree of fun that the actors and director insert into the film. So that was my north star going into this film.

As actors, what was it about this film that made you want to take it on and portray your respective characters?

CE: Well, for me, it was just the level of fun to it. For so long, I’ve played characters who are very capable actors (or action heroes), so it was nice to play someone who is human and grounded and represented what most of the audience would do in a similar situation—panic—with romance as the backdrop. I thought that it was all the more clever and exciting.

ADA: I was very excited to be working with Chris again. And of course, with Dexter Fletcher, who I think is a very talented director who stepped into a genre that we’re not used to seeing from him—and he did so beautifully.

From just talking with both Chris and Dexter as well as reading the script, I thought that it was a lot of fun. And I could imagine what my next three months of work will look like, and it looked pretty good to me. I was coming off of very deep, intense, dramatic roles and this felt a little bit like a palate cleanser. I could not have timed it better. This is also the kind of movie I would like to see.

Chris, what was it like playing a character who not only isn’t invincible but needs saving?

CE: It was definitely one of the most appealing parts of the movie—to be able to play a character that wasn’t the hero, who didn’t know what he was doing and was, in some sense, incapable. I think that’s really fun. It was nice to play someone who is human and grounded and represented what most of the audience would do in a similar situation; panic.

The film can be perceived as having somewhat of a “love conquers all” theme to it. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

ADA: Love is what makes you question everything. You can live a ‘mission over men’ life for years, but at what cost? And you only find that out when you fall in love. Falling in love is always a good choice to make.
