5 Things To Look Out For In Baz Luhrmann's New Netflix Series, The Get Down

You'll definitely want to get down to it this weekend on Netflix

Netflix The Get Down

The latest Netflix series launches today and, as with all Netflix OriginalsStranger Things, anyone?—you'll want to binge watch all six episodes immediately (Part two will be out in 2017). Helmed by none other than showmaster extraordinaire himself, The Get Down is about the rise of hip-hop and the last days of disco, as seen through the eyes of a group of teenagers from the Bronx. Set in the 1970s, it's a magical maelstrom of bright lights, street grit, breakneck beats, insane dance numbers and, of course, amazing clothes. Here's what you can look forward to watching ... and then discussing with the rest of the world once you're done.

The Get Down will be available for streaming for all Netflix members in Singapore on Friday, 12 August, 2016 at 3pm.

Luhrmann's continued quest for authencity saw him engage Nas as an executive producer for the show, who also wrote all the raps in The Get Down. Other show collaborators include hip-hop pioneers and legends Grandmaster Flash and Rahiem, while the official soundtrack features the likes of Christina Aguliera, Zayn and more. Oscar winner Catherine Martin serves as executive producer and, along with lead costume designer Jeriana San Juan, worked on getting the details of the clothes exactly right. From Studio 54-worthy get-ups for the disco divas to the right sneakers for the hip-hop crew, the street style is completely on point. Photo: Courtesy of Netflix

Naturally, a show about hip-hop and disco needs all the right moves. Rich and Tone, brothers who have choreographed for the likes of Madonna, Michael Jackson and Usher came on board and captured the essence of Bronx in the 70s—from hustling to B-boying and vogueing, no style of dance was left out of the extravaganza. The teenagers who form the heart of the show might be unknown actors for now, but trust us, that is soon set to change. Justice Smith, who was in Paper Towns, charms as Ezekiel "Books" Figuero, while Herizen Guardiola shines as Mylene, the pastor's daughter who can't help her love for music and disco. But there's no lack of familiar faces—Jaden Smith plays philosphical graffiti artist Dizzee, while Jimmy Smits and Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito also lend gravitas to the series. If you were wondering whether Baz Luhrmann's signature cinematic style would translate well on TV, wonder no more. As with Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, The Get Down is a feast for the eyes—overflowing with rich colours and a startling vibrancy, even the most chaotic scenes ooze a sense of heady glamour and sophistication.
