Buckingham Palace Allows Prince Harry To Wear Military Uniform To The Queen's Vigil

Royal higher ups have changed their minds, and are now allowing Prince Harry to wear a military uniform to his grandmother's final vigil after all.

BAZAAR.com has learned Buckingham Palace officials informed Prince Harry that he can wear his military uniform to Queen Elizabeth II's final vigil. On Saturday evening, he will join his royal relatives at Westminster Hall to stand in silence for 15 minutes in front of the queen’s coffin.

Her funeral will take place two days later, on Monday, September 19.

The decision comes after BAZAAR reported the Palace had not granted the Duke of Sussex permission to wear the uniform to the mourning ceremonies for the late monarch—including her funeral—as the official attire is reserved for working members of the royal family. At the time, the news came as a shock, due to the fact that Harry served in the British Army for 10 years, and Prince Andrew, who is also no longer a working royal, was granted permission early on to wear the uniform to his mother's vigil.

A representative for the Sussexes told BAZAAR royal contributor Omid Scobie at the time, "Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex will wear a morning suit throughout events honouring his grandmother. His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears, and we respectfully ask that focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

The rep added that Harry would wear a mourning suit instead.

Still, it seems the Palace has since taken back its initial decision, and Harry will wear his military uniform this weekend, alongside brother Prince William and father King Charles III, to honor his beloved grandmother.

"Granny, while this final parting brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first meetings—from my earliest childhood memories with you, to meeting you for the first time as my Commander-in-Chief, to the first moment you met my darling wife and hugged your beloved great-grandchildren," Harry wrote in his tribute to the queen following her death last Thursday. "I cherish these times shared with you, and the many other special moments in between. You are already sorely missed, not just by us, but by the world over. And as it comes to first meetings, we now honour my father in his new role as King Charles III."
