The Chic Clique: Jamie Chua And Calista Cuaca, The Queen & Her Princess

The rise of Instagram brought the world to our screens—giving us instant access to the world’s most inspirational and fashionable. In this new series, BAZAAR handpicks 10 made-in-Singapore accounts that have a reach beyond the little red dot

Don’t be fooled by their sweet smiles and embellished crowns—Jamie Chua and Calista Cuaca are fireballs. Although the two constantly poke fun at each other, their similarities end when they talk fashion and their social media game.

After all, the duo are as opposite as the influential Jenner sisters: Chua, who likes Kendall, loves statement classics (she always has a Hermès Birkin in hand); while 17-year-old Cuaca is all about Kylie’s trendsetting beauty and style, often Instagramming her makeup must-haves and coveted sneaker collection (hello, Yeezys).

Chua started her Instagram account three years ago with the sole purpose of “following” her daughter (who was 14 at the time). It has since evolved into a lucrative past time for Chua with over 300k followers.

Her two businesses, which launched after her rise to #instafame, include skincare brand, Luminous1 and online luxury goods reseller, The Closet Raider. Snapchat is Chua’s latest obsession, on which she posts candid videos of her daily dining, fitness and fashion escapades for all to view, while Cuaca’s is set to private.

Like in most cases of mothers advising their young daughters, Chua’s suggestions to Cuaca to post more frequently often go unheeded, despite her best intentions.

“We’re both stubborn,” declares the fresh-faced teenager on what she inherited from her mother. Chua jokingly retorts: “Shouldn’t you say you’ve got beauty or patience from me? But what I really want you to have are the double Ds: Discipline and dedication.” Mothers do know best.
