Philip's life has been featured in all four seasons of The Crown, including his marriage to then Princess Elizabeth, the births of their four children, his family's exile from Greece, his relationship with his mother, and his growing role in the monarchy. Actor Matt Smith (Doctor Who) portrayed Philip in the first two seasons of the show, followed by Tobias Menzies (Outlander) in Seasons 3 and 4. Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes, Game of Thrones) will portray the Duke of Edinburgh for the show's incoming final two seasons.

Previously speaking to The Guardian, Smith called the prince "a roguish, brilliant man." He said, "And that's what I love about him: he's done what he wants, when he wants, how he wants, with whom he wants. He hasn't asked permission. And his wife's the Queen."

Menzies previously told Deadline of the role, "He's enjoyably a debunker. He pokes at unnecessary pomp and circumstance, he's funny. What Olivia [Colman] and I built with the texture and atmosphere of that marriage I also came to really like."

The Crown's fifth season will reportedly begin filming this summer.
