'The Sex Lives Of College Girls' Season 3: Everything We Know

Some big changes are coming to Essex College.

Sex Lives of College Girls

Don't worry, the HBO Max comedy The Sex Lives of College Girls isn't keeping us hanging after that finale.

The coming-of-age series following a quartet of students attending a New England liberal arts college was renewed for its third season this week ahead of season 2's final two episodes, which dropped December 15. The announcement came amid a series of cancellations on the streamer, and fans are breathing a sigh of relief that viewers will return to the fictional Essex College.

"Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble continue to brilliantly capture the college experience in the most entertaining and relatable way," Suzanna Makkos, executive vice president of original comedy and adult animation at HBO Max, said in a statement. "This series is the perfect balance of comedy, sex, curiosity, and chaos, and we can’t wait to see what the next season brings." The series will likely return next winter.

The first two seasons of SLOCG were released in November 2021 and 2022 respectively, so season 3 will likely premiere next winter if the production can follow the same schedule. The main cast is also likely to return, including Amrit Kaur, Pauline Chalamet, Reneé Rapp, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Mekki Leeper, Christopher Meyer, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Lolo Spencer, Renika Williams, and Mitchell Slaggert.

Reneé Rapp won't be a series regular for season 3 — and will eventually exit the series.

According to Variety, Reneé Rapp, who portrays the resident rich girl, Leighton, will make an unexpected exit from the hit series due to her pursuing her music career, touring, and also finishing up the upcoming Tina Fey-helmed Mean Girls musical. The actress will reportedly make an appearance in a handful of episodes but will eventually be written out of the series.

Housing choices will loom over the girls as they begin their sophomore year.

Season 2, which premiered in November, brought several changes for our main foursome, as Regan (Renée Rapp) played the field while dating multiple people, Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) tackled one of the school's most difficult classes, Bela (Amrit Kaur) launched her own comedy zine, and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) searched for a way to pay tuition after losing her scholarship. The season finale saw the unlikely friend group torn apart, as Whitney fled the dorm after seeing Kimberly kiss her ex Canaan (Christopher Meyer) and Bela requested to transfer schools after hitting an academic and social low point.

Though Bela will likely (hopefully!) end up sticking around Essex, showrunner Justin Noble told Variety that the roommate situation will be a looming question in the forthcoming season.

"We dangle this idea of, who's going to room together in second year?" he told the outlet. "For me, that was always the most fascinating part of college. It’s literally announcing a test. It’s saying, 'Hey, you all lived together. Do you like each other enough to live together again?' I remember being in the meeting when it happened and looking around like, 'Oh my God, are we going to answer in front of everyone and say we want to live with these people?'"

Noble also opened up about Bela's fate to Deadlineexplaining her state of mind after she was kicked out of The Foxy.

"I think that Bella has a lot to figure out, he told the outlet. "When she’s giving that laundry list of items at the end of the episode, you really do realize that she has surprisingly not had the track record at Essex that her upbeat, positive energy self probably thought she had. I think it hits her fast, and I think the perfectionist in her just has to cut and run. It’s like, ‘This is too much to fight backwards from. I should start fresh somewhere else.’ She’s on the poster. We’ll have to figure that out."
