The newest crop of talented designers have been unearthed. Who will emerge winner?

NewGen 2018

The stakes are high for these up-and-coming designers from India, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, who are in the running for the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia New Gen Fashion Award. Get to know the creative minds and inspirations behind the collections that will be presented next week at the NewGen fashion show.

Gaurav Singh, India

Gaurav Singh’s collection took cues from the kadali patra, the banana leaf. Its folds and edges were rendered into sculptural khadi dresses with exaggerated shoulders and layered pleats. His work is characterized by modern, sophisticated pieces driven by organic and architectural forms.

Robin Roy, India

Robin Roy was inspired by Wabi Sabi and Kintsugi, Japanese concepts that celebrate beauty in imperfection. What resulted was a collection of smart menswear-inspired separates fashioned out of recycled merino wool and tencel, with details like spliced panels, sheer accents, and gold threads weaved in for added finesse.

Andandika Surasetja, Indonesia

Aptly naming his collection 'Perspektif', Andandika Surasetja of Indonesia contemplated the paradox of perspective and sight. The motives applied onto the pieces of his collection were created from photographs taken by people with visual disabilities and low vision.

Frederika Cynthia Dewi, Indonesia

'SWEET ENCOUNTER' is centred around Frederika Cynthia Dewi's first pregnancy and the myriad of emotions that came with it'. She was also drawn to women's fashion during the baby boom generation in the 1940s, citing gathered shoulders and V-necklines as details that inspired her. These elements, complemented with an exclusively-designed batik fabric inspired by the pelvic bone on a woman‘s body, are a nod to both her Indonesian heritage and her reflections on motherhood.

Andrew Low, Singapore

Andrew Low seeks out inspiration from all that happens around him, be it big or small. His collection is identifiable by the use of clashed prints and colourful embriodery on luxe fabrics, and comprises references ranging from Victorian ruffles reinterpreted as sleek details on sophisticated blouses to masculine military gear reworked into feminine outerwear.

Julian Cheong, Singapore

Helmut Newton’s 1966 picture of an androgynous woman clad in Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking suit was one of the touchstones of Julian Cheong's collection. Building her collection around the inconspicuous cigarette seen on the fingers of the woman, she featured graphic slogans and an abstract tartan print inspired by tobacco leaves on cropped jackets, pleated skirts and oversized coats.

Thammachat Choksan, Thailand

'Memory 25th' was inspired by the beauty of light on natural surfaces during Thammachat Choksan's visit to Chiang Mai. Utilising watercolour painting techniques, Choksan recorded and translated his artistic interpretations of colour and atmosphere on a variety of materials such as traditional silk, lurex and nylon.

Pongsakorn Sriya, Thailand

Pongsakorn Sriya let his imagination run wild with 'Suite 98', which was based on a bedding experiment. Bedsheets, quilts, pillow and bolster cases, as well as women's and men's nightwear were key in the design development process, resulting in a collection that showcases unexpected drape details and ingenious cuts with a whimsical touch.
