If you’re one of Velda Tan’s 117,000 followers on Instagram, here’s a piece of good news: You can now cop a piece of her style. Tan launched her line, COLLATE The Label, to much fanfare last night. And like its name suggests, Tan weaved her accessible style sensibilities into versatile clothes in classic silhouettes that are suitable for all of life’s important occasions.
What sets your label apart from the rest?
More than anything, I feel that it is the versatility of COLLATE’s pieces that will set our label apart. In essence, COLLATE’s aesthetic approach is all about how ‘less is more’; we focus on keeping silhouettes simple to allow women creative freedom when it comes to personal styling. There is also a lot of play between structure and soft fabrics, resulting in designs which convey feminine confidence for the modern woman. By fusing form and function, we hope to dress the everyday woman in an effortless elegance that transcends seasons. We also pay great attention to details, such as the quality of stitching and the types of fabrics used for our designs. Created for keeps, our pieces are made with much care for the comfort of the wearer in mind.
What are your favourite pieces from this collection?
There are a few pieces from this collection which I favour for their stylish ease and wardrobe mileage. The satin camisole is a dependable essential, great for casual wear, or layering for dressy occasions. The jumpsuits are well-tailored and figure flattering by giving an illusion of longer legs. They make the perfect desk-to-dinner pieces for busy days. I also have my eyes on the two-piece bonded satin set. This set is quite the epitome of versatility and value; one could wear them together, or separately with other pieces. The possibilities for styling these pieces are quite endless, depending on your personal preference.

What are your wardrobe must-haves?
I asked myself this question when I was designing the collection! I find it important for the pieces we create to resonate with the modern, everyday woman. Regardless of age or profession, I think women are increasingly looking out for good quality designs which convey ease and effortless elegance. Being comfortable in what I am wearing without worrying about wardrobe malfunctioning is a definite confidence booster. For me, I ready to go with a tailored blazer, a well-made jumpsuit and good underwear!
What is the first thing you’d do once the runway show is over?
I’d give #teamcollate a fat hug! They’ve worked really hard to put the show together.
