The Louis Vuitton Paint Can Bag Takes Bucket Bags To A Whole New Level

Virgil Abloh coloured outside the lines for his final Louis Vuitton collection.

The fall/winter 2022 menswear collection was the very last that Virgil Abloh personally designed for Louis Vuitton and it was staged in what the late designer called the Louis Dreamhouse. It furthered his continued exploration of the themes of boyhood—that moment in time when a child is not yet exposed to the conventions and limitations imposed by society. Indeed, the collection is full of naïve motifs such as flowers and clouds, as well as the codes Abloh established for the House—tailoring in regal proportions, deconstructed and recontextualised suits, and exaggerated, elevated streetwear.

There are also nods to the artists he loved, such as Surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico, one of whose works he turned into a print. But the most compelling item is in the vein of Marcel Duchamp: A paint can—complete with metal handle—crafted in Louis Vuitton’s iconic Monogram coated canvas and rendered in brilliant hues. Like the artist with his “readymades”, Abloh—who blurred boundaries and upended conventions his entire life—turned a humble, utilitarian object into a luxury collectible.

The LV Paint Can bag is $3,900 and is available at Louis Vuitton, #B2-36 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands (Tel: 6788 3888)
