NCT's Taeyong, Emily Ratajkowski And 'Succession' Mania At LOEWE Men's Spring/Summer 2024
From pin-up models to inside-out shapes, creative director Jonathan Anderson continues thinking outside the box with his latest collection
There was one moment at the latest LOEWE showing in Paris which had us all guessing. Was this a fashion show or a Succession reunion? If the overarching commentary on Paris Men's Fashion Week this season says anything, signs may point to the latter; the increasingly blurred lines between fashion and entertainment have only gotten murkier with Pharrell's arrival onto the scene (the newly-minted creative director for menswear at Louis Vuitton made a guest appearance here, too), as well as a flurry of Korean brand ambassador appointments which shows no sign of slowing down. But much like the family of media tycoons at the centre of the hit HBO show, LOEWE has always been far ahead of the curve.

The quirky Spanish luxury label recognised the value of entertainment long before the rest of the industry did, and creative director Jonathan Anderson's creations have always been made for a viral moment. Just ask longtime fans of the brand, many of whom may as well overlap with those who love Succession, as well as its cast members (Nicholas Braun and Brian Cox, who play cousin Greg and Waystar patriarch Logan Roy, respectively, posed for some cute photos at the show). And Anderson's latest collection continues to entertain, exploring the figurative meanings of fashion in some fun and ever-funky ways. Sparkle and shine across the first few looks opened the show, before giving way to more prototypical LOEWE fare: hand pockets which were too high up for our liking, curiously-constructed chunky knits and other clever tailoring quirks. Full-leather jumpsuits defined the shape of the models wearing them, rather than the other way around. Two oversized swatches of fabric - held together by equally-oversized pins - gave new meaning to the phrase 'pin-up model.'
This inversion, which flips the script on how human shape and form usually inform design, is a classic Anderson party trick. Thinking inside-out - or outside the box, if you will - is what makes the British designer's collections so full of intrigue and imagination time and time again: a treat for the senses as well as our social media feeds.
