PREP WITH FACE OIL

Start by applying a lightweight, hydrating face oil on clean, flake-free skin. Unlike creams, which can absorb unevenly and lead to streaky foundation application, oils sink in uniformly and quickly while keeping skin supple and moisturized, says Shrankhla Holecek, founder of Uma, a line of ultra-luxe oils. Choose one with active ingredients that suit your complexion's needs: "Formulas with frankincense essential oil help reduce the appearance of wrinkles," Holecek says. "Your makeup won't look crepey or settle into creases, which makes you look older." Try Uma Absolute Anti Aging Face Oil ($175). "If you're prone to breakouts or inflammation, clary sage and grapeseed oils help control shine and irritation." We like Sunday Riley Juno Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil ($90) . To boost radiance, look for citrus oils, which are found in Olay Regenerist Luminous Facial Oil ($40).

DON'T SKIP PRIMER

Primers help your makeup stay put and also act like spackle, smoothing over lines, pores, and rough patches, says Tim Quinn, Giorgio Armani celebrity makeup artist. If you tend to be dry, use a generous amount; if you're oily, use less. Those that are balmy in texture, such as Giorgio Armani Armani Prima Glow-on Moisturizing Balm ($110), need to be warmed up between your fingers first. Spread it on evenly, then apply foundation. "Massage it into your skin—it shouldn't rest on top," Quinn explains. "It should disappear and leave you with a smooth finish; you'll end up using less makeup." Also try Estée Lauder Revitalizing Supreme + Global Anti-Aging Wake Up Balm ($62). Fill in any stubborn fine lines, large pores, or acne scars by also swiping on a targeted blurring product, like Bobbi Brown Instant Confidence Stick ($45). For younger-looking eyes and makeup that won't budge, shadow primer is a must. Pick one that complements the color of your lids—not your skin tone. If your lids are blue or purple, try a yellow-toned primer; if they're pink or red, a beigy shade will cancel it out, says Ricky Wilson, Dior celebrity makeup artist. "You want to take away any discoloration that can look like signs of fatigue." SET YOUR MAKEUP

What may seem like a superfluous step is actually a critical one. A setting spray, likeClarins Fix' Make-Up ($27), keeps everything in place and is an excellent mattifier. Mist it on as you head out the door. "Makeup looks really good when it's had time to settle into the skin, but if you're doing it at home, then going right out to a party, using a setting spray speeds up the process," Quinn says. If you prefer finishing powder, you have several options: loose or pressed; white, translucent, or tinted. If you want to add brightness or will be the subject of many selfies, opt for a loose white formula. Make Up for Ever HD Microfinish Powder ($35) is a cult favorite. Sweep it on lightly using a dense brush—IT Cosmetics Heavenly Skin Bye Bye Pores Powder Brush ($58), is ideal. To control shine, dust or pat a translucent powder like Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($38) only on your oily areas. And if you've recently had a peel, laser treatment, or injectable, Quinn recommends keeping a color-correcting compact in your clutch.Guerlain Météorites Voyage Powder Compact ($179) is a classic. "Sometimes the skin tone looks different after those procedures," he says. "This kind of powder helps control that."
