Making beauty bespoke… Traditionally, cosmetics have been created by marketing teams who make pretty palettes for women. But the modern woman knows more about beauty than ever before and I wanted to give her the opportunity to put it together for herself. All my palettes are about mixing and matching.

Using Japanese technology… All of the powder products in the matte customisable category are the result of slurry technology, a Japanese technique where the powders start out as a liquid and are poured into pans like cake batter. Then, they are gently pressed as the moisture evaporates out of the formula, leaving behind a more buttery, velvety and blendable texture.

Interpreting trends… At the recent Marc Jacobs spring 2015 show, François Nars literally used just moisturiser, concealer and lip balm. I prefer a bit more makeup on the face. Whether it's a graphic liner or bold lip, one element of the face has to be played up.

Age-old beauty tips… My grandmother used to dab her lipstick on her cheeks as a cream blush. I still do this sometimes as they have very similar textures. This creates colour harmony on the face which is extremely flattering.
