As the new season quickly approaches, it’s time to update your beauty wardrobe and embrace a new host of lip colours. This season, apart from the usual dark and moody shades that fall is so known for; the runways embraced multiple beauty trends that were an ode to individualism and expression, which means a whole host of lip colours to start experimenting with.

Here, we list the best lip colours for the season.

Natural gloss

A mainstay during fall 2019 was the glossy lips. Soft and natural, glossy lip was a complement to the bright, bold eye colour and the overall glowy, dewy skin trend that shows no signs of abating.

To adopt this trend, apply lip gloss liberally over your lips. Try the Fenty Beauty By Rihanna Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, $31 for a pop of colour that complements all skin tones, which also helps to keep lips moisturised thanks to hydrating shea butter properties, or the M.A.C Lipglass, $27.40, a fan favourite that leaves lips with a glass-like sheen.

Skin Tone

A nod to the ‘90s minimalism trend that is still going strong, this pared back look lets lip shades blend into your skin tone.

To try this trend, take your usual nude lip and go a shade lighter. For those with fair or lighter skin, go for colours with a pink or rose based hue, such as the MAC Matte Lipstick in Honey Love, $33, a warm toned, rosy beige nude.

For those with medium and olive skin, go for colours in beiges or browns, such as the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick Collection in Beige Promenade, $55.

Classic Red

Red lips can never go out of style, and for this fall, makeup artists turned to velvety, ultra-matte finishes of all shades of red.

Try the Giorgio Armani Beauty Lip Maestro, $55, a highly pigmented lip stain with a velvety, creamy matte-finish. Its iconic shade 400 is a classic, universal red that flatters all complexions, with 50% more pigments than a traditional matte lipstick.

Metallic

If you love a little sparkle, you’ll be happy to hear that the metallic trend is in full swing this season. Metallics were not only spotted on the eyelids of nary a fashion model on the runway, but also on the lips.

Try the Urban Decay Vice Special Effects Long-Lasting Water-Resistant Lip Topcoat, $32, for an added layer of drama with glitter as top coat over any lipstick, or the SMASHBOX Always On Liquid Lipstick Metallic Matte in Pearl Please, $42, a matte liquid lipstick for a glittery, but wearable daily look.

Burgundy

A classic colour inspiration for fall, you can’t go wrong with putting on a vampy lipstick for the cooler season. Burgundy can look flattering on all skin types, and the key is to understand your skin undertones.

If you’ve got warm undertones, opt for a shade with brown undertones, such as the MAC Cremesheen lipstick in Hangup, $33.

For cool undertones, try burgundy colours with blue undertones such as the NARS Lipstick in Fast Ride, $38.95, a sheer mulberry tint.

Plum

Plum lipsticks come in handy each time you want to make a serious statement to your look, and are a step up from the usual red lipsticks.

Tom Ford Lip Color in Bruised Plum, $76 is an ultra creamy lipstick that comes in deep plum with subtle, cool undertones and buildable coverage.

Dusty Mauve

This hue of pale purple, or dusty rose, gives your lips a tiny flush from a more natural, nude look.

Try the Bobbi Brown Luxe Matte Lip Colour in Mauve Over, $49, a lightweight, but high impact lipstick in mauve, or Chanel’s Rouge Allure Ink Fusion Second-Skin Intense Matte Liquid Lip Colour In Mauvy Nude, $50, for a liquid matte lipstick that is lightweight, velvety and wearable.

Black

Not just reserved for Halloween, the black lipstick is quickly gaining traction as a year round beauty trend. To rock a black lip, make sure you apply the lipstick generously and blot twice, while keeping the rest of the face bare.

Choose a long lasting, hydrating, and hyper pigmented formula, such as the Maybelline Color Sensational Loaded Bold in Pitch Black, $14.90, which doesn’t smudge or crack easily, or the Kat Von D Beauty, Studded Kiss Creme Lipstick in Slayer, $31, a satin-matte pitch black colour that is medium dark with buildable coverage.
