Beautiful nails complete a look when you’re dressing up for a special occasion. A stylish manicure is also a fun way to express yourself and show off your personality – bold colours for sassy girls, anyone?

While there are always classic colours and designs that stand the test of time, various styles make their mark each fashion season. Here are some nail trends you should be trying out for spring/summer 2023.

This look is also known as the ‘glazed donut trend‘ which was started by Hailey Bieber and was a huge hit in 2022.

And it’s set to be hot in the new year too. There are various ways you can achieve this look, such as silver-white chrome, fresh chrome or a subtle chrome if you don’t want too much bling.

“I think chrome will continue to be a huge nail trend in 2023 but accents, swirls and negative space designs rather than the whole nail,” says Robbie Tomkins, nail artist.

This look has been seen on rapper/singer Doja Cat and on the hit TV series Euphoria. Bold and big are two words associated with this look and you can glam it up with studs, gems or chains.

Robbie describes this look as “conceptual, space age, chunky 3D nails” and he says they’re “not hugely practical but will definitely get you noticed”.
“Sissi Clay is wicked and I’ve done some amazing designs using this and chrome,” he adds.

“For the 3D nail trend without the commitment (as this is usually created using gel), I’d recommend getting hold of some plain press-on nails and having some fun painting in bright colours and then covering them with beads, studs, Swarowski crystals or anything else you fancy using nail glue,” Robbie advises. “’Use sticky tabs (available on Amazon / eBay) and when you’re bored with them, simply pop them off and keep them for next time.”

Robbie reveals that while colour trends usually come direct from Fashion Week, he always checks in with the predictions from the colour experts at The Pantone Color Institute. This year, they have introduced 10 colour shades that “integrate tradition and innovation, marrying our need for brightness and vibrant positivity with quieting tinted tones”.

“Honey shaded coral, crisp, brilliant blue and fruity, tropical orange all feature – the bolder and brighter the better!” says Robbie.

He recommends a quick and easy way to tap into the colour trend – paint each nail a different colour (some call this Skittles nails).

“Don’t worry about going in a gradient or matching colours – clashing bold, bright colours such as coral, blue and orange will ensure you look one step ahead in your nail game,” he adds.

This classic style is set to be trendy again in 2023. French tips was a popular look at NYFW Spring/Summer 2023, with brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Sandy Liang featuring them.

“The French manicure continues to live its best life but instead of the usual cream or white, opt for bold, bright colours (such as the Pantone colours), chrome or ombré,” suggests Robbie. “And I’ve seen some wicked designs using magnetic polish.”

To get this look easily at home, Robbie recommends painting the tip on a naked nail tapping into the negative space trend (painting designs etc on a naked nail so you can see flashes of your nail bed). This way, if you’re heavy handed you can use a clean-up brush to perfect that smile line.

Who doesn’t love a splash of pink?

And if this is your colour, live it up with hot pink on your hands. Shows from Batsheva and Pierpaolo Piccioli featured bursts of pink.

And, with the Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling coming out in July, it’s a look that will probably catch on even more after that.

You can get this look at a salon or even at home if you don’t have time to get intricate designs done with your manicure.

“Press-on nails as well as decals on nails are going to be very popular,” says Arinah Rahid, director/gallerist at White Pyramid Gallery & Nail Bar.
For decals on nails, she suggests colourful rhinestones as this look is easy to achieve.

“Apply a light base colour gel polish and stick on the rhinestones or any decals you like after curing,” she advises. “Then top it off with a top coat and cure again.”
