In these unprecedented times, we’ll take every opportunity for a touch of self-care – and when it comes to our skin, there’s no doubt that a face mask is the way to go.

If you’ve scrolled through Instagram in the past week, (who hasn’t) you’ve probably noticed the A-lister’s self-care gadget of choice. From Chrissy Teigen to Victoria Beckham, Hollywood’s glowiest faces are all seeing themselves through self-isolation with an LED face mask.

They might look frightening (or, in some cases, perfectly Instagram-worthy), but these futuristic devices are actually the ultimate in at-home skin tech. Just ask January Jones, who shared an Instagram Story of her own LED session last night.

So, how do they work? That depends on the colour of light you choose. Red diodes work by stimulating the skin cells to product collagen, leading to firmer, plumper skin in time, while acne-prone types can call on blue diodes to kill the bacteria that can lead to blemishes. And for the truly serious? Near infra-red, or white light, penetrates deeper than them all, replenishing depleted cells to spark firmer, more resilient skin from the inside out.
