Beyond a creator of shoes and makeup, Christian Louboutin is an avant garde artist—one who views his beauty and sartorial masterpieces as objets d’art, built upon philosophies of sculptural extremities, ergonomic design and covetable decadence. So when it came to picking his A-team for Christian Louboutin Beauty, he went for striking, boundary-pushing females who embody the women he designs for: Fearless beauty star and global make-up artist, Isamaya Ffrench; and top model and brand ambassador, Mica Argañaraz.
In an exclusive interview to mark the Parisian beauty house’s launch in Singapore, we speak to Mica about her vision of beauty, the significance of red, and how it’s like working with the legendary creator-craftsman himself, Christian Louboutin.
How did you get into modelling, and what have been some of the key experiences along the way?
I was born in Buenos Aires but grew up in the countryside, riding horses and playing in nature. Later on I moved back to the city to go to university and I was discovered there. A year later I went to Paris for the first time. I have been travelling around a lot since then and working with many people. Those experiences have taught me so much about myself, and making my own decisions got me to where I am today. I feel very lucky that this line of work has given me so much and allowed me to give back and to help people.
What is your vision of “beauty”?
Strength and confidence are beauty. You look beautiful when you feel beautiful. I also find beauty in nature, music and art. For me that’s when I paint or play the guitar, or when I’m looking very healthy and natural and decide to put on a bold red lip. Velvet Matte, of course!
What does Christian Louboutin Beauty mean for you, and what do you think you bring to the brand?
I love Christian Louboutin’s vision and sense of beauty. I felt honoured that he wanted me to represent the brand and was incredibly excited and felt empowered by this opportunity. I hope to help empower other women through my work with Christian Louboutin Beauty. Also, it’s such a creative, artistic and colourful brand. I love art and being creative myself, so what could be more fun?
Fronting a Parisian beauty house—what does Paris mean to you?
I love Paris. In fact, I live there! It’s a very creative city that wears its heart on its sleeve. The city empowers me to live an artistic, passionate life—painting and doing my watercolours. There is also a simple kind of elegance in Paris. Nothing says it better than a natural makeup look with red lips—something every Parisian woman knows how to pull off!
What does the colour red mean to you? How does it make you feel?
Red is my favourite colour. Red is passion and ingenuity. It makes me feel fierce, and it makes me feel like myself. Plus, it’s amazingly versatile—I think red lips are the perfect transition from day to night.
How would you describe Christian Louboutin—the man, the creator? What’s been your experience so far in working with him?
Working with Christian Louboutin has been a dream. To me, he is visionary, creative, thoughtful and inclusive…and surprisingly playful! When he came to the Velvet Matte photoshoot—my first for Christian Louboutin Beauty—it was such a pleasure to hear him talk about women and beauty and the power of red lips. It was an inspiration!
How did you get yourself in the mood while shooting the new Velvet Matte campaign?
I got myself in the mood for the Velvet Matte photo shoot by being myself: A little bit rebellious, artistic, boyish but still very feminine. Plus, it’s amazing how a simple swipe of red Velvet Matte can make you feel put-together and effortlessly beautiful.
Who inspires you? Do you have a vision to share with women today?
I’m inspired by all women, and I most admire my mama. As global brand ambassador for Christian Louboutin Beauty, I’d just like to encourage other women to pursue their passions, find what makes them beautiful and share it with the world.
