Unless you've been living under a rock, you'd have noticed that makeup with red undertones have been making waves on social media. But if you're a colour novice when it comes to makeup, we've got great news for you: we caught up with Urban Decay's Artist-In-Residence, Amanda Rodriguez (@udamanduh), when she was in town recently, and she's got loads of great tips on how to experiment with these gorgeous red-based makeup shades.

TIP #1: YOUR SKIN HAS TO BE ON POINT
According to Amanda, "it is extremely important to even out your skin tone and make sure you hide any blemishes you have because red eye makeup will emphasise and bring out the redness of the zits if you don't conceal them properly". Try using a creamy concealer that is oil-free, is easy to blend and contains anti-bacterial ingredients to help calm skin as well. We like Clinique's Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Concealer, $34.
TIP #2: TAKE BABY STEPS
"Not everyone can dive straight into the trend," says Amanda. For a more refined look, she suggests using Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Torch, a burnt orange colour, to rim the water line. Next, top off with a matte eye shadow to smudge out the edges for a soft, smoky eyes.

TIP #3: START WITH SIENNA COLOURS
The easiest red-based colours to pull off for beginners are coppery shades, says Amanda. "Look for those that are shimmery and metallic in textures because you don't have to be an expert to blend them out evenly," she advises. And really, what could be prettier and more feminine than a touch of rose gold eye shadow on the centre of the eyes?
TIP #4: KEEP YOUR LOOK MONOCHROMATIC
Make sure to add colour on cheeks for a harmonious effect. Amanda advises using a peachy blush because "it looks good on almost everybody". And don't forget to finish with a feathered brows look using a tinted brow gel as it's important to "have something softer to even out the bold eye makeup". We like Benefit's Gimme Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel, $42,which conditions and coats brows with tiny microfibres so they appear thicker.
