Glossy lids

As with all things dewy and luminous, the glossy eye shadow trend shows no signs of abating. A glossy glow on our lids gives your face the illusion of added hydration, and an overall added lift, making it for a high impact look with the lowest effort.

Though they are easy to achieve – just simply tap a layer of gloss over your eyelids - they are not the easiest to wear, and it may just end up a sticky mess if you are not too careful. If you’re looking to get a glossy lid with depth and staying power, read on for how to make it work for you.

Apply eyeshadow

To start, take your pick of eyeshadow as base –think shimmery, metallic or matte. For optimal results, try to avoid glitter, as the finer the shimmer, the better for the wet and slick look. Pastels also tend to mute under gloss, so try to go for bolder colours such as a navy instead of a baby blue.

All formulas work here; so you can choose from liquid, cream, powder and gel.Try the Butter London Glazen Eye Gloss, $35 which is an eye shimmer that applies like a gloss, but dries like a powder, and is easily buildable to your desired intensity. Apply with a brush or fingers, making the colour as sheer or opaque as you please.

Line it in

For more definition, apply eyeliner pencil along the lash line and on the bottom lashes. Try a waterproof; smudge proof liner, such as Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Eyeliner, $35 or the Make Up Forever Aqua XL Eye Pencil Waterproof Eyeliner, $36.

Add shine

The trick is in the balm, and it’s essential to use one that will not be uncomfortably sticky in humid weather.Use a light balm such as Kevyn Aucoin The Exotique Diamond Eye Gloss Moonlight, $52.30, a non-tacky and lightweight eye gloss made specifically for the glossy lid look, or the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, $41, a versatile balm that gives you that dewy sheen when swiped over your lids. For something a little more high impact, try the MAC Clear Lip Glass Clear, $15, for glass-like shine.

To apply, tap on a thin layer with your fingers, starting with the centre of the lid and working your way around it, and making sure to avoid the crease areas.

Rest of the face

This look works with natural complexion and a bit of blush. You can play with textures by contrasting your glossy lids with a matte-finish lip, or for extra illumination, dab some gloss over your highlighted areas.

Remember, eye gloss can feel weighty and sticky if you aren’t too used to it the first time around. If your glossy eye shadow moves throughout the day, simply run your ring finger across the lid for an easy and quick touch up.
