Before you roll your eyes at the thought of another celebrity beauty line, picture this: Jennifer Lopez at the 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Enough said. Lopez defines ageless beauty, so a skincare line from the superstar centered around inner and outer glow just makes sense. Soft-launching today with a full release in early January, JLo Beauty is a collection of eight glow-enhancing products including staples like a moisturizer, cleanser, and serum, as well as a dietary supplement.

“I’ve been thinking about doing a skincare line probably for the past 20 years,” says Lopez. “You just kind of have to wait for the right time. I think I needed to become a little bit more realized in myself to have a philosophy on an actual beauty company: beauty from the inside out and the idea of beauty having no expiration date.”

The hero ingredient in the line is olive oil, which Lopez says is a family tradition and beauty secret passed down from her grandmother and mother for healthy and shiny hair, skin, and nails. The dietary supplement includes pure olive extract, while the skincare features the JLo Beauty Olive Complex, an antioxidant-rich and skin-friendly blend of squalane, fermented oil, extra-virgin olive oil, and olive leaf extract to moisturize and soothe.

Lopez says her cleanser, called That Hit Single, is named for the fact that you need to use it only once to remove all signs of makeup. Its blend of lipids and luxe antioxidants ensures that your skin stays plump, not stripped, but that also means it’s quite pricey for a cleanser at $38. The multitasking serum, called That JLo Glow, is one of the stars of the line. It contains two kinds of ferments to brighten skin, as well as the olive complex and a sugar-derived matrix that instantly tightens and subtly lifts the skin. This means you’ll see smoother skin right away, and then brighter skin over time.

That Limitless Glow is a sheet mask, which we’d expect from Lopez given her reputation as the queen of red-carpet beauty. It’s soaked in the brand’s serum and costs $18 a pop. Chase the serum with one of the two moisturizers, depending on whether it’s day or night. That Blockbuster Wonder Cream is a rich night cream packed with peptides and hyaluronic acid to plump skin right away, while That Big Screen SPF 30 Moisturizer is light and dewy, perfect for applying under makeup. There’s also an eye cream and a shimmery complexion booster available in three shades.

“A dermatologist told me at a very young age to use sunscreen … people don’t understand that that’s such a big part of staying youthful looking. I didn’t know it then, but now as I look and I’ve been doing it for 25 to 30 years, I go, ‘Wow, this was one of the secrets that I didn’t even realize I was doing,'” says Lopez. “I knew that for JLo Beauty that I wanted to develop a sunscreen that we could use every day under your makeup, where you can really, really protect your skin and keep it young over the years. And I think that girls should start from the time they start skincare at 12, 13, 14, 15 years old.”

In addition to her new skincare line and devotion to sunscreen, Lopez also credits her daily exercise routine and healthy dietary habits (little to no alcohol and junk food) as the key to looking ageless. But the truth is Lopez has always had “pretty good” skin, as long as she keeps it hydrated. “I think growing up … I was more normal to dry on the dry side. So for me, it was always about hydrating. My whole skin care routine when I was growing up was probably Ivory soap,” she says. “In the Bronx, it was very cold for most of the year. I went to a Catholic school in my uniform and knee socks, and it would be freezing. So it was just about kind of keeping my skin hydrated. So that was my concern when I was younger. I was lucky to have pretty clear skin.”

Now at 51 years old, Lopez is all about a mix of maintenance and mindfulness. “Once you get to a certain age, you start losing some of the fullness in your face. You start seeing little lines here and there. Those are the things that are my concerns now,” she adds. Even J.Lo has days when she doesn’t feel her best. “Of course, I wake up and feel like I look like crap a lot of times, and I try to change those thoughts. … I try to tell myself, like one of my idols Barbra Streisand, ‘Hello gorgeous,'” she confesses. “I say, ‘I am youthful and timeless at every age. I am happy. I am whole. I am surrounded by love.’ Me and my children live a happy, adventurous life full of joy and laughter.”

With the launch of JLo Beauty, Lopez hopes women embrace their beauty from the inside out at every age. “No one wants to hear, ‘Oh, you look great for 50.’ You want to hear you look great—doesn’t matter what age you are. For us, beauty having no expiration date, being youthful and timeless at every age, and beauty coming from the inside out are really, really the mantras of the brand.”
