Navigating the plethora of skincare brands available and all of their promises is not easy. Add wearing a mask and working from home to that and it gets even harder. Fortunately, there’s a great selection of homegrown skincare brands and products to choose from, making the process a little less painless.

Harper’s Bazaar Editor-in-Chief Kenneth Goh recently went on One FM 91.3 to talk about his favourite local skincare brands and what they’re best known for with Angelique Teo

1. Sigi Skin

Founded by Xenia Wong when she was only 23 years old, Sigi Skin is the homegrown skincare label for any time-strapped urbanite. The brand started with three essential multitasking products—cleanser, sunscreen and eye cream. This means that the cleanser doubles up as makeup remover (no pesky wipes here) and the Morning Glow sunscreen is also a moisturiser.

Each product is made from nutrient-rich superfoods paired with scientifically-backed ingredients—such as avocado and acai extracts to moisturise, brighten and strengthen skin. Bonus? All products are vegan and cruelty-free, and suitable for kids too.

2. Dr. TWL Dermaceuticals

Founded by brother-and-sister duo Mr Justin Teo Zhi Lang, a pharmaceutical engineer, and his sister Dr Teo Wan Lin, an accredited dermatologist in Singapore, Dr. TWL Dermaceuticals specialises in cosmeceutical skincare line. Most recently, they developed an anti-ageing and anti-acne copper silk face mask with nanoparticle technology providing UPF 50+ broad spectrum sun protection—all so we can protect ourselves and our skin.

The masks are lab-tested for the active release of copper ions — a clinically-effective anti-ageing treatment that works by promoting collagen production and reduces pigmentation. More importantly, these masks are also certified anti-microbial, which means that they can prevent and treat mask-induced acne.

The duo has also committed to donate 25 percent from the sale of masks to Bartley Community Care Services for their Support Love Care Connect (LCC) project #SgUnited. The project focuses on extending practical help to vulnerable and disadvantaged families during the pandemic through distribution of essential food items and care packages—including surgical masks.

3. Alche{me} Skincare

Remember how we were saying that finding the right skin care products that work are tough? Well, Singapore label alche{me} takes all the guesswork out of that with their customisable skincare range.

Founded by Tuyen Lamy and Constance Mandefield in 2017, alche{me} uses intelligent facial detection technology, and surveys to access your skin type and to determine the ingredients most relevant for your bespoke skincare cocktail. The formulas are then conceived by an expert in France, and made in Singapore at a state-of-the-art laboratory—which follows a set of stringent quality control and safety measures—so you know you’ll be getting exactly what you ordered.

Another great aspect of alche{me} skincare products is that its lightweight texture is perfectly suited for Singapore’s warm and humid climate.

4. Allies of Skin

Created by Nicolas Travis, homegrown skincare label Allies of Skin is globally-acclaimed and sold by renowned retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Sephora and Selfridges. Their products are formulated without silicones, parabens, sulfates, drying alcohol, synthetic fragrances, and dyes with mineral oils. Allies of Skin also works with labs in the United States and South Korea to perfect the formulas, packing in ingredients with high-efficacy. What this means is that you’ll get a clean beauty product that’s safe to use on skin, and above all, delivers results.

Also, if you’ve been experiencing maskne (like most of us are), then you might want to try their Promise Keeper Blemish Sleeping Facial, which is said to be able to combat the P.Acnes bacteria and strengthen skin barrier while you get your beauty sleep—literally.

5. Skin Inc

As one of Singapore’s OG beauty brands, Skin Inc needs no introduction. Founded by Sabrina Tan using her proprietary Skin Identity—an online skin diagnostic questionnaire—it’s a pioneer in using data to drive skincare innovation in Singapore.

When they first launched their game-changing My Daily Dose serum, it flew off the shelves of their boutiques and counters in over 150 cities. And that’s not evening counting online sales. Needless to say, the proof is in the pudding.

One of their latest data-drive “skin-novation” is the My Daily Dose for Bright Eyes, a whipped, serum-infused eye cream formulated to tackle fine lines, puffiness and dark circles.

6. Epion Clinic

Epion Clinic is your all-in-one skincare boutique by Dr. Melvin Tan. The clinic also carries his own range of skincare products such as the cleanser that’s infused with SPF, so you get clean skin with sun protection—all in one step. Another popular product is the alpha hydroxy (AHA) acid serum named 3.1 RENEW that gently but effectively exfoliates the skin. Its potent AHAs sloughs off dead skin cells and minimises the appearances of wrinkles and dark spots with regular use (once or twice daily) over time.
