How To Wear The Coloured Mascara Trend

It’s not as tricky as it looks

From vibrant pastel hues to rebellious reds, spotted amongst celebrities and beauty bloggers, rainbow-hued lashes have certainly been making a splash in the beauty world.

Coloured mascara not only adds a welcome twist to any makeup look, but also enhances your eyes, making them appear brighter and more awake upon application. Plus, these beauty arsenals are dramatic yet wearable, providing minimal effort, with maximum impact.

Interested in amping up your makeup routine, but unsure of how to start?  Here are some pointers to keep in mind.

1. Add depth and subtlety by layering your coloured mascara over a black one

If you’re only looking to dip your toes into the trend, consider this subtle, but no less impactful, approach. Apply your coloured mascara of choice over a coat of your usual black one to give your lashes a bit more oomph and depth.

2. Wear the shade that works best for you

Coloured mascaras can certainly be flattering, but it’s important you choose the right colours that suit you. As a general rule, blue mascara goes well with black/brown eyes, whilst brown and orange shades go well with blue eyes, and so on.  If all else fails, consider the colour wheel.

3. Get the coloured mascara to pop with a primer and/or pigmented powder

Sometimes, it’s hard to get the colours from your mascara to really pop, especially with darker toned lashes. To get the colours really showing, coat your lashes with a white primer first, or consider mixing powder pigments of the colour in the formula and painting a few coats of it on your lashes with a brush.

4. Let your eyes do most of the talking by keeping the rest of your makeup simple

Wearing coloured mascara is a statement look on its own, so the focus should really be on your eyes. Keep the rest of your face bare and minimal to prevent your look from appearing too messy, and to really let the punchy pigments shine through.

5. Wear the same shade eyeliner and mascara

To make the colours really pop, match your coloured mascara shade to your eyeliner, just like in Rihanna’s bubblegum pink Coachella look.

6. Layer the coloured mascara on both your top and bottom lashes

As with the previous tip, shading both your top and bottom lashes really helps to enhance its effect and colour. Add the same shade of eyeshadow for an added dramatic effect!

7. Pair your coloured mascara with a contrasting coloured eyeliner

Embrace the coloured mascara for what it is – bold. And what better way to do this than pairing it with another contrasting colour – either with a swipe of an eyeliner or extending it to an eyeshadow.

8. Equip yourself with the right tools
