To Makeup Or Not: How To Look Good During Your Workouts

Should you opt for a flawless face or enhance your natural glow when exercising?

It Takes Work To Be Beautiful_ Makeup Or Fresh Face When Exercising

Whipping out a phone, and snapping a couple of selfies after a workout is a priority for many sport enthusiasts these days. After all, it’s the world of #fitnessgoals, #gymflow and #fitchicks, and navigating social media feeds, looking flawless even after a gruelling HIIT session, is not just desirable but almost obligatory. We find ourselves grappling with the question: Is it actually okay to wear makeup when you work out?

This seemingly trivial question has sparked a heated discussion among fitness enthusiasts, beauty aficionados and health experts alike.

On one side of the spectrum, advocates argue that wearing makeup during a workout is an empowering choice. They reason that a touch of foundation or a swipe of mascara boosts self-esteem, and gives individuals confidence to face the challenges of exercise head-on. With fitness becoming a social affair, where gym selfies and workout videos dominate social media feeds, the pressure to maintain a flawless appearance and present a unique look and style has reached new heights. In this context, makeup can be seen as an essential tool to project an image of beauty and one’s dedication to fitness goals.

However, opponents of workout makeup emphasise that the primary purpose of exercise is to push physical limits, challenge the body, and embrace the rawness of the experience. Sweaty, red faces and unkempt hair are but badges of honour, signs of dedication and hard work. Moreover, the gym should be a space free from judgement and societal expectations, where individuals can focus solely on their health and well-being, unencumbered by external pressures.

While both sides of the debate present compelling arguments for sporting a flawless face at the gym, it’s crucial not to overlook the impact of sweat and makeup on the skin. Dr Rachel Ho, medical director at La Clinic, highlights the consequences: “Makeup mixed with sweat and sebum can clog pores and exacerbate acne. It can also lead to inflammation and worsen skin conditions like eczema and rosacea, especially for those with oily, acne-prone skin or inflammatory issues.” Makeup artist and beauty educator Larry Yeo agrees, emphasising that “sebum and sweat built-up on the skin throughout the day, coupled with makeup can become the optimal environment for bacteria to proliferate.”

The potential drawbacks of wearing eye makeup extend beyond the skin. Eyeliners and mascaras have the tendency to smudge, increasing the risk of eye infections. Additionally, Yeo warns of the possibility of cysts forming along the lash line, which is home to oil glands as well.

So, what’s the solution for achieving a radiant look while working out? Dr Ho suggests prioritising skin health to address insecurities and blemishes effectively. This may involve targeted skincare products or aesthetic treatments to combat acne or dark spots. For those who need to transition from a long day at work to a workout, Yeo recommends using a micellar solution, such as By Terry’s Cellularose Micellar Water Cleanser, to quickly remove makeup with a saturated wet wipe or cotton pad before exercising.

However, if you must wear makeup, there are ways to reduce the potential harm. Opting for lightweight and breathable makeup is crucial. Yeo points out that most modern foundations are made to be breathable, so air can permeate the skin, and pores don't get clogged; but he would prioritise a formula that is able to repel both moisture and sebum so that the makeup doesn’t transfer onto the yoga mats or gym equipment when you exercise. As for eye makeup, both experts suggest using water-resistant mascara, eyeliner and brow pencils to prevent smudging. There is also the option of using hybrid skincare products, as suggested by Dr Ho, “like tinted sunscreens with some coverage” that offer both skincare and makeup benefits. Or you can simply cut down on the amount used, focusing on spot concealing instead of wearing foundation on the entire face.

Once the workout is complete and you’ve taken all your selfies, it's essential to remove makeup immediately. “Leaving makeup on after working out is just fodder for bacteria to bloom,” says Yeo.

In the pursuit of looking good during workouts, it’s essential to strike a balance between aesthetic aspirations and protecting our skin. By understanding the potential consequences and taking proactive steps to care for our skin, we can maintain a healthy, radiant complexion while reaping the benefits of physical activity. Remember, true beauty shines from within, and confidence is built on self-acceptance, whether we choose to wear makeup or embrace our natural beauty in the gym.
