How To Sweat-Proof Your Makeup In Singapore's Tropical Heat

Beat the city heat and prevent your makeup from budging and smudging with these important tips.

Sweat-proof makeup

With Singapore’s balmy weather all year round, it can be challenging to know how to prevent makeup from melting in the heat. The hot and sunny weather may be great for days at the beach but before you know it, sweat and humidity are thrown into the mix and all hell breaks loose with your beauty game.

But all hope is not lost. While we can’t control the weather, there are ways to prevent your makeup from melting off of your face. On top of being a little cautious, we’ve rounded up some tips on how to look your best throughout the day while keeping your makeup intact.

1. Skin Prep

No matter how much makeup we can pack on, a clean base can make a world of difference to your look — which is why you should never skip your skincare routine. In this case, think of your skin as a canvas. Starting with a smooth and clean base allows the paint to go on seamlessly and helps the pigment to show its true colours. And it’s the same exact thing with our skin. The key is to keep skin well-hydrated – but be careful to select the right moisturiser for your skin type and needs. Too thick and makeup won’t adhere well, while too light and makeup could look patchy. To combat the heat and humidity, opt for a lightweight and preferably water-based moisturiser that will keep skin well-hydrated and feeling comfortable.

2. Prime Time

Sweating is inevitable if you’re living in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. Especially for our T-zones and the areas under our eyes, we’re more prone to excreting more oils. Hence, applying a primer may do wonders in helping your makeup to stay intact.

To prevent makeup from sliding off or disappearing by midday, apply a makeup primer before foundation. It not only evens out the complexion by reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, fine lines, post-acne marks and uneven skin tone, but also acts as a barrier between the skin and makeup, so sweat won’t affect your makeup as much. In short, it helps makeup stay intact and last longer.

3. Go light

To prevent makeup from melting in the heat, opt for a lightweight foundation. And the rule of thumb during application: Less is more. After all, the last thing you need is to have your foundation settle into your fine lines when you perspire. In fact, if your complexion doesn’t need much coverage, skip the foundation and opt for a tinted moisturiser, or just use concealer to cover up the odd spot (or two) or dark eye circles.

4. Lock it in

Once you’re done adding some bronzer, blush and highlight to your face, don’t forget to finish off your look with some loose powder. It not only combats excess shine and creates a smooth finish, but also helps hold the foundation in place – crucial with mandatory mask-wear, so it doesn’t melt or disappear by midday. And to really keep in things place, finish off with a setting spray. It gives skin an extra hydration boost while ensuring that makeup stays put. It’s perfect for locking in your makeup and it looks natural. Hold the spray about an arm’s length away before misting directly onto the face, and you’re good to go!

5. Waterproof Everything

To prevent eye makeup from smudging when you sweat, choose waterproof or sweat-resistant formulas. This is especially important for eyeliner and mascara. For extra security, use an eye makeup primer over the eye area. As for the cheeks and lips, choose cheek and lip tints that are more budge-proof than creamy formulas.
