Miranda Kerr's Skin Care Secret Is Mushroom

The supermodel chats about her new cleanser and quarantine routine

Not only is Miranda Kerr a supermodel, mom, author, and organic beauty brand founder—she’s also a walking skincare ingredient encyclopedia. On a call before the launch of KORA Organics' new Milky Mushroom Gentle Cleansing Oil, out now, Kerr rattles off the benefits of the skin-refreshing formula as naturally as she does when chatting about the weather, or recalling how her family has adjusted to work-from-home life.

Take the oil cleanser’s namesake mushroom for example. “That silver ear mushroom is an ingredient that I love to use because it really helps bind that moisture to your skin. It acts like a hyaluronic acid,” Kerr tells BAZAAR.com. “The babassu oil and apple seed oil and the sunflower seed oil, that combination with the silver ear mushroom really helps put the essential fatty acids into your skin whilst cleansing your skin in a gentle way.”

Gentle, intentional, experiential—these words bubble up when Kerr breaks down her own skincare routine, which has featured the dual-phase oil cleanser for quite some time. “Even if we don't have makeup on, I do still believe it's important to cleanse your skin at the end of the day,” she says. “What's funny is my husband, he was like, ‘Miranda, I know you've got this cleanser in [the shower], but I keep seeing this separation, is that supposed to be that way?’ I was like, yes honey, that's actually intentional. Like, I really wanted it to be that way—that dual-phase cleansing milk that you have to shake to activate, because that's part of the experience.”

Kerr notes that, like many, quarantine has changed her beauty routine. “I'm definitely more focused on skin care and less focused on makeup, and more focused on doing at-home facials, which I love. That's when I will leave my Turmeric Brightening and Exfoliating Mask on for 10 minutes, so that it dries and it really pulls out those impurities,” she says. “For me, I'm limited with time. Once the kids are in bed, I can run a bath, put the Turmeric Brightening and Exfoliating Mask on, just enjoy the relaxation while there's no screaming kids around and put a candle on.”

Short on positive vibes this year? KORA—and Kerr—aim to fill in any gaps. Kerr notes how she has “crystals all around the house,” and that the KORA product line is “filtered through rose quartz crystals. So, in the manufacturing process, they touch upon rose quartz to really add a little bit of magic to the products, so that when you're using them you feel that loving energy.” (She adds that the brand included clear quartz crystal for the Milky Mushroom Cleanser, as well.)

After all, it’s the little things that count. Before you even open up the new cleanser, after scanning through the ingredient list and directions on the box, you’ll probably notice one word near the bottom at the back—forgiveness. It’s inscribed on the actual bottle itself, too.

“On the back of every product there’s a positive word, whether it be bliss, joy, love, radiance, forgiveness, acceptance. These words are powerful and they're uplifting words,” Kerr explains. “The intention is to uplift the products and uplift the user. When they’re using it, they can look on the back and have that little gentle reminder to be in that positive state of mind.”
