Haze season is upon us once again, and apart from irritating our airways, the dust particles can also irritate our skin leading to inflammation, redness, itching, premature ageing, dryness and even breakouts.
To help protect your skin when the PSI readings reach unhealthy levels, it’s important to invest in anti-pollution skincare that is loaded with antioxidants to help strengthen skin cells and neutralise the harmful effects of the haze. Here are the products we recommend.
When you’re out and about in the haze, one of the most important things you can do to look after your skin is make sure you cleanse properly at the end of the day. The Shu Uemura Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant & Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil is formulated with green tea extract for anti-oxidation, moringa extract to remove pollutants, and papaya extract to polish away protein stains. For the best results, simply pump 3-4 pumps of the cleansing oil onto dry palms and massage thoroughly over a dry face. Add a few drops of lukewarm water to the face to emulsify so that the oil turns milky white and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
When it comes to serums, an antioxidant-packed serum is the way to go. We love Dr Roebucks Tassie Anti-Pollution Serum, which is formulated with vitamins A, C, and E, myramaze, blueberry extract, ginseng, and amino acids to protect skin from environmental aggressors and everyday pollution, while helping to retain a youthful glow.
When your skin is dry it can easily become irritated thanks to a weakened skin barrier. Without a good balance of hydration, it’s left vulnerable to external aggressors and irritants (such as haze) causing redness and itchiness. Make sure you use a potent moisturiser such as Murad’s City Skin Overnight Detox Moisturizer, which neutralizes pollutants and strengthens skin’s barrier at night. Vitamin C helps brighten and even tone, while nourishing botanicals visibly plump skin to help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
During haze season it’s important to switch to an anti-pollution SPF such as the Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA++++. With advanced UVA/UVB technology and pollution protection, the formula helps defend against UV rays, pollution and free radicals, while providing all-day hydration and a matte finish.
In addition to daily cleansing, it’s a good idea to add a facemask to your skincare routine once or twice a week to help remove impurities, dead skin cells, and pollutants. The Chantecaille Detox Clay Mask is infused with botanicals that rebalance skin moisture levels, Kaolin clay that helps absorb oil, nourishing pure honey, and rosemary that acts as a natural purifying agent.
Last but not least, don’t forget to protect your lungs when you’re out and about with a N95 face mask. We love the Airinum Urban Air Mask 2.0, which uses a five-layer filter technology in order to provide a superior protection against different particle types and sizes. It’s reusable, washable and is available in three different colours: black, grey and our favourite, pink.
