Nestlé, the purveyors of “au naturel” creamer and the ultra-addictive KitKat, are developing an unprecedented type of coffee—one that will keep your buzz going all day long. So once that hits the market, you can kiss caffeine crashes goodbye and enjoy sustained energy instead.
An all-day caffeine high is no doubt alluring, especially for those coffee addicts who are downing multiple cups every day. According to the brand, the new beverage is currently being developed by scientists at the company’s labs in Lausanne, Switzerland in conjunction with Swiss technical university École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
This new league of coffee simply involves slow-release caffeine. This means that the java won’t give you that big boost effect all at once but instead will slowly release caffeine into your system throughout the day. EPFL explains that this same tool is already being used in the pharmaceutical industry for extended-release drug delivery.
Here’s the nitty gritting on how it works: Researchers are currently working toward harnessing the power of cubosomes—made of lipid molecules and water—that can release nutrients or medicines in your body in a more controlled manner. So let’s keep our fingers crossed that they figure it out sooner rather than later. We could really use a long-lasting buzz while getting the rest of our holiday party planning done.
