You probably have seen photos of SK-II's Bare Skin Project campaign, be it on social media or even through family and friends. The campaign featured 6 global celebrities; Tang Wei, Ni Ni, Kasumi Arimura, Chun Xia, Mayu Matsuoka and of course, the stunning Chloe Grace Moretz. The 21-year-old Hollywood actress looked flawless in the portraits while only being bathed in natural light. What you didn’t know (and may shock you) is that these portraits were not only shot by world-renowned photographers, but also contain zero make-up in order to showcase her real, bare skin.

That’s right, no make-up at all.

In a world that is swarming with doctored images, photo-editing apps and Instagram feeds being a mere collection of Photoshopped pictures, we are constantly presented with an image of false perfection. Many women these days compare themselves to an unattainable standard that is the result of smoke and mirrors, making them uncomfortable and less confident to showcase the skin they’re in. It’s a dangerous trap to fall into.

Enter SK-II who firmly believed that beauty lies in truth and embracing the skin we’re in.

SK-II went against the grain with their campaign, that truly aims to showcase the beauty of bare skin. The well-loved Japanese beauty brand worked with world renowned photographers from Magnum Photos who are the creators behind some of the most iconic photos such as ‘Afghan girl with green eyes’. For the #BareSkinProject, SK-II specifically worked with Christopher Anderson, one of the world’s most famous portrait photographers, who has shot the likes of former President of the United States, global models and more. He is well-known for capturing humanity in a raw, organic light, whilst still showing the beauty behind their realness. His photos are so genuine and that’s what makes them beautiful. This authenticity is exactly why he was perfect for this challenge.

As this is the first time Chloe was photographed without a shred of makeup on her, she was understandably wary about being bare-faced in front of the camera. However, as she connected so deeply with the message that SK-II is sending out, she bravely overcame her anxiousness and began using their iconic Facial Treatment Essence to prep for the photoshoot. Christopher captured Chloe’s beauty and the fruits of her skin-prep in a real and wonderful way, reflecting the clarity and youthfulness of her skin. Her glowing complexion made possible by SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence is showcased in its raw, honest form. Making it clear that beautiful, crystal clear skin never needs to be retouched or edited. It’s perfect as it is.

And that's the kind of effortless beauty we all want to achieve.
