With her porcelain skin, moody stare and penchant for dark lips year-round, Rooney Mara isn't your typical Hollywood leading lady: The actress does romantic goth better than anyone on the red carpet and her Carol press tour has been no exception, from Victorian fashion to vampy lipstick. But it's the metallic detailing in her hair that we can't get enough (it also happened to be one of our favourite looks from the Spring '16 shows).

According to her hairstylist Adir Abergel, "[Rooney] loves wearing her hair back, so I have to challenge myself to find interesting ways to reinvent the term 'updo.' I found this inspiration from my travels to Morocco, where I saw many artists use gold threading on fabrics and pillows. I bought a bunch of thread and knew that Rooney would be the perfect source of inspiration for me to use it on.

A lot of the shapes are taken from Samurai warrior hairstyles or Edwardian or deco shapes."

Best of all, the looks are "super easy" to do on your own, promises Abergel: Just fold a low braid or a high, '80s ponytail up, secure the ends with a mini latex elastic and pin it down against the head, then wrap gold thread around the elastic and knot it at the base once you've achieved your desired thickness. Consider all your holiday hair decisions finalised.
