Selena Gomez hit the Met Gala red carpet wearing a custom Coach dress that was soft and fluttery like a gorgeous piece of lingerie. Yet all anyone on social media could talk about was her rather overzealous spray tan.

Gomez, who is a devout Christian, said her look for the Met Ball was inspired by Queen Esther in the bible. But Twitter users compared her to Ross from friends due to her deep spray tan. Gomez usually walks the red carpet with a glow, but she went extra-dark for tonight's occasion.

Maybe Gomez went ultra-bronze on purpose, or maybe it was just the lighting, but some fans wondered if her spray tanner held a secret grudge against the star.

For her beauty look, makeup artist Hung Vanngo created an intense golden glittery eyeshadow using Marc Jacobs Beauty and Kiehl's skincare. Her lipstick choice was a matte nude shade with a hint of white undertone—some fans mentioned online that a different lip color might have made her bronze glow look a little less intense. Her hairstylist Marissa Marino created soft and romantic ringlets that were pulled back into a low chignon.

Gomez walked the red carpet last year with her then-boyfriend The Weeknd. The two broke things off in October. Many were wondering if Gomez would bring her on-again off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber to this year's Met Gala, but she instead walked the red carpet solo.

Fortunately for Gomez, it is entirely possible to reverse a self-tanner mishap. The quickest and easiest trick is to mix lemon juice and baking soda together and let it soak into skin for several minutes. You can also try a sugar scrub or scrub with AHA or BHA acids to help slough off the color.
