It’s awards season once again, and we’re kicking 2025 off with the Golden Globes. With each year, the awards show surprises us with couples debuts, memorable outfits and the occasional speech that has the world teary-eyed.

Ahead are some highlights from the 82nd Golden Globe awards, that we will ponder about until next year’s show rolls around.

1. Demi Moore wins her first-ever Golden Globe after 45 years

Demi Moore is no stranger to the film industry, having started her career in 1981. This January was eventful for Moore, as she nabbed the Golden Globe prize for Best Actress (Musical/Comedy) for body horror film The Substance. In her speech, she shared vulnerably that she was in a career lull, right before the aforementioned script came to her. Living proof that hard work does pay off.

2. Zoe Saldaña wins best supporting female actor

Joining Moore in the Golden Globe first-timer club is Zoe Saldaña, who won the award for Best Supporting Female Actor in a Motion Picture for her role as Rita in Emilia Pérez. Saldaña, most known for her role in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise, honoured the women (Selena Gomez, Sofía Gascón and Audiard) of Emilia Pérez in her thank you speech.

3. A well-deserved win for Wicked

When musical-turned-movie Wicked hit cinemas late last year, it quickly became the topic of many conversations for theatre aficionados and everyone alike.

Although Wicked lost out to Emilia Pérez for the Best Musical/Comedy, it still managed to nab the award for Box Office Achievement. The film may have only won one award, but its box office success speaks for itself.

4. Host Nikki Glaser was on a comedic roll

Host and stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the 82nd Golden Globes, and definitely set the tone for the night with her many jokes. Glaser kept the audience entertained, with well-timed comedy roast skills and playful banter.

Her best jokes of the night ranged from poking fun of how it seemed like Glen Powell was in every movie last year, to also letting out a motivational reminder to all in attendance: “If you lose tonight, please just keep in mind that the point of making art is not to win an award. The point of winning an award is to start a tequila brand so popular that you never have to make art again.”

5. Nikki Glaser and Ariana Grande held space for each other

Here’s another example of Nikki Glaser’s humour, as she referenced the popular Wicked meme of “holding space” and brought Ariana Grande along for the ride.

6. Cute couples everywhere

Double-nominee Selena Gomez showed up to the show with fiancé Benny Blanco. The freshly engaged couple shared some tender moments, and even managed to get a playful tease from Nikki Glaser about their relationship.

They may have made their red carpet debut as a couple at last season’s show, but Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner are back, and more loved up than ever. Jenner was even seen snapping a few cute pictures of her beau with her film camera.

It was a joy for the millennials who grew up watching The O.C. and Gossip Girl to see IRL couple Adam Brody and Leighton Meester’s relationship unfold. It was almost like watching Seth Cohen and Blair Waldorf grace the awards show together.

7. Angelina Jolie and her daughter Zahara attend the show together

It was a heartfelt surprise seeing Angelina Jolie bring daughter Zahara Marley Jolie as her plus one to the Golden Globes. This marks Jolie’s first appearance to a film and television show since 2018, and most notably, her first public event since her split from Brad Pitt. She marked her return in a stunning Alexander McQueen dress.

8. Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore have a playful “tiff”

What is an awards show without a little playful banter? If you’ve watched The Substance, you’d know that Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore’s characters would never share centre stage. The pair definitely shared a cute moment presenting the Best Male Actor in a Drama Series award to Hiroyuki Sanada in Shōgun.
