Matthew Knowles "laughed so hard" when he saw the footage of daughter Solange attacking Jay-Z in an elevator after the 2014 Met Gala.

Although he didn't offer any insight as to what caused the fight, which is largely considered one of the greatest celebrity mysteries of all time, the 66-year-old did say that the behaviour was typical of Solange.

“I have to tell you, I laughed so hard. I laughed so hard because, if you know Solange — that’s Solange,” he said on US chat show Wendy. “You just never know what you’re going to get… firecracker. Don’t know where she get that from…”

“Then Beyoncé would be in the corner, quiet, just kinda, like ‘When y’all finish, let me know.’ So I laughed."

There has been a lot of speculation about why Solange lashed out at her sister's husband, while Beyonce watched on. Some have said the altercation was caused by Jay-Z's alleged flirting.

The family released a statement not long after the incident.

“Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred,” it read in part. “They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.”
