Beyoncé Has Spoken: Barbie-core Is Not Dead

And proves no one can pull off the trend like her

Seemingly everyone wore hot pink last year, with the vibrant colour dominating runways, street style, and magazines. Aptly dubbed Barbie-core (an omen presaging the Greta Gerwig–induced Barbie mania about to take over this summer), the trend was championed by the likes of Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Gigi Hadid, and so many more A-listers. Though noticeably fewer people seem to be enlisting the colour in their wardrobes this year, Beyoncé just proved that the trend isn’t truly dead—until she says so.

The international superstar recently debuted a new hot-pink look on her Renaissance World Tour. The jaw-dropping ensemble—a custom-made creation from her clothing line with Adidas, Ivy Park—featured a shimmering sequinned gown with a halter neckline, a keyhole cutout at the bust, and two hip-grazing leg slits. The piece came with matching sequinned opera gloves and a shaggy long coat with metallic fuchsia fringe. She capped off the outfit with black shield sunglasses and bespoke silver pumps by Malone Souliers.

Meanwhile, her backup dancers coordinated with Beyoncé in their own hot-pink looks, including bikini tops, short-shorts with fringe trim, glittering fishnet stockings, mesh crop tops, and skintight bodysuits.

The singer explained the concept behind Ivy Park’s newest collection in an Instagram post.

“I started designing this collection over a year ago. I was so engulfed in all things RENAISSANCE and was inspired by Studio 54, Bob Mackie and the disco era,” she wrote. “I wanted to do a modern twist using the signature IVY PARK neon and bring disco to the beach in this swim collection. I’m so happy to share this with you and even more proud to launch it for the first time on the RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR. I’m proud to be among the very talented Black designers featured in last night’s show to celebrate Juneteenth.”
